Publisher's Description

In the last fifty years, the history of World Christianity has been disproportionally shaped, if not defined, by African Pentecostalism. The objective of this volume is to investigate and interrogate the critical junctures at which World Christianity invigorates and is invigorated by African Pentecostalism. The essays of the thinkers gathered here examine the general relationships between World Christianity and Africa and the specific interplays between World Christianity and African Pentecostalism. Scholars from multiple disciplines, continents, and countries evaluate how the theological scholarship and missional works of eminent African intellectual Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu have contributed to the scholarly understanding of how Global Christianity has been mediated by its reception in Africa. They also investigate how African Pentecostalism has been shaped by its contact with the diverse forms of Christianity in Africa and the rest of the world. “First-class scholarship, cogent analysis, and lucid articulations of the emergence, development, and impact of African Pentecostalism in the shaping of World Christianity. This collection of essays is illuminating and instructive on Christianity on the continent as a whole. An indispensable resource and a fitting tribute to Professor Asamoah-Gyadu.”

Daniel K. Darko

“African Pentecostalism is unreservedly a major bondholder in the vertical and horizontal mobility of Christianity in Africa, but also in the African diaspora. Although not a sole player, yet its profoundest impact is perhaps in the pentecostalization of Christianity. Through his versatile, interdisciplinary scholarship, Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu as the Osofo of indigenous Pentecostal theology and a doyen of Pentecostal pneumatology and renewal makes superb etic contributions towards inserting Ghanaian (African) Pentecostalism within global maps of Christianity.”

Afe Adogame

“In this fitting tribute to one of the unsung theologians of the present era, some of the foremost thinkers of African Pentecostalism unpack and analyze the multiple tensions and intersections between African Christianity and World Christianity. How has World Christianity affected the condition of the African continent? How has African Pentecostalism mediated the theological assumptions of World Christianity? These are two of the critical questions answered by the intelligently crafted essays in this important and timely collection. It will appeal equally to students and scholars of African Pentecostalism, World Christianity, and other religious traditions and practices.”
