Publisher's Description

Biblical infallibility is a sine quo non in any evangelical theology. Nevertheless, the interpreter may be unduly influenced by psychological or cultural factors or little exposed to other religious traditions and further discoveries about the universe. These often-unconscious sources of interpretation inevitably impact scriptural exegesis, theological interpretation, and doctrinal definition, engendering internal tensions and aporias in questions such as the relation between divine sovereignty, evil, and unjust suffering, and the validity of other religious traditions. This third and last volume of an evangelical Christian systematic theology, which takes account of psychological wellbeing, cultural diversity, and religious plurality, reassesses and reinterprets core Christian doctrines concerning God and humanity, in dialogue with major classical, medieval, and modern theologians including Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Schleiermacher, and Barth.

“With this volume, Divine Sensibility, Edmond Zi-Kang Chua concludes his trilogy on Asian systematic theology that saw the light of day in less than three years, giving a new meaning to ‘prolificity.’ Building on his second volume, Experience, Culture and Religion in Systematic Theology, Chua attempts a reinterpretation of evangelical systematic theology that remains faithful to its creedal affirmations on divine revelation, divine transcendence, divine identity, divine immanence, divine creation, and on humanity as the image of God and at the same time is open to contemporary insights on psychological wellbeing, cultural diversity, and religious plurality. Such a theological reconciliation of apparently opposite viewpoints is a herculean task that Chua discharges with scholarly depth and pastoral sensitivity. Evangelical conservatives and liberal theologians will have to judge whether Chua’s efforts are successful, but there is no doubt that his reinterpretations of Christian loci theologici respond to an urgent need in the academy and the church. I strongly encourage a careful reading of Chua’s trilogy.”

“Dr Chua is a rising scholarly star within the broad evangelical tradition of Christianity. While remaining true to core evangelical values, Chua probes beyond any narrow perspective to explore the interface of theology with diverse disciplines and contexts. His approach to a fresh discussion of key Christian doctrines is both academically thorough and delightfully innovative. Divine Sensibility, the third volume in his systematic theology, is an ambitious work that is both challenging and rewarding. For anyone with an interest in contemporary evangelical theology, and especially hermeneutics, this work is a must-read.”

Douglas Pratt

“Once again, Chua has delivered a very distinctive conservative Evangelical theological enquiry that is not hostile to religious diversity. Based within conservative worldviews that some may find uncomfortable, Chua nevertheless seeks for openness to others and uses psychology, religious studies, and deep textual reading of the biblical text and Christian thinkers to offer theological readings that are both traditional and original. Whether one agrees with his arguments, Chua’s voice stands apart and deserves attention.”
