Publisher's Description

Evangelism Next is an exploration of the practice of evangelism for a new era of Christianity. This collection of essays, drawn from the proceedings of the 2023 Fuller Theological Seminary Missiology Lectures, brings together academics and practitioners from around the world and across multiple disciplines. Evangelism as a church practice has come under scrutiny. While the practice of evangelism has been challenged, the need for communicating the evangel has increased. Part I examines the dysfunctional narratives in need of de-construction in our current practices of evangelism. Hyper-individualism, consumerism, racism, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression that have characterized evangelistic practices are explored from multiple theological perspectives and disciplines. Part II demonstrates new models emerging from global and local contexts: from holistic mission and interfaith engagement to Spirit-empowered grassroots movements, communal evangelism, and the vital witness of incarcerated believers. Evangelism Next invites readers into a dynamic reimagining of what it means to bear witness to the gospel today—one that is contextually aware, justice-oriented, and open to the transformative work of the Spirit. This is essential reading for anyone passionate about renewing the practice of evangelism in a changing and complex world.

“Fuller’s 2023 Missiology Lectures drew a record number of eight hundred people to this hybrid event to hear the stellar line-up of presenters on the topic of evangelism. Their contributions, now brought together in this volume, rescue the practice from distortions, reconnect it with the broader Christian mission, and re-vision the evangel for post-Christendom. Evangelism Next will critically engage a diverse world in ways that are inviting, transformative, foster liberation and justice, and aim at reconciliation.”

“This book aims to challenge head-on the conflation of evangelism and various forms of colonialism. Without abandoning the former but eschewing the latter, this volume exhibits creative models that offer compelling evangelistic alternatives without the baggage that the next generation might find objectionable. This is truly a holistic, twenty-first-century mission which is both fresh and biblically oriented, shedding the unnecessary accretions which have proven to be deterrents to the spread of God’s kingdom in this world.”

Allen Yeh

“This volume is a state-of-the-art smorgasbord—a collection that challenges the cultural captivity of evangelism and introduces fresh, holistic, and Spirit-driven possibilities for sharing the evangel. I recommend it to all readers concerned about the cooptation of Christian witness by whiteness and empire.”
