Publisher's Description

Autobiographers typically mine memory to write of a struggle for place. For some, that place is wealth, fame, or power. For others it's overcoming the wounds of addiction or an abusive past to find a place of stability. As compelling as those stories can be, this autobiography is different. Dupuy comes from a large, intact Catholic family, in which he was well-cared for. While he explores memory and writes of a struggle for place, he finds place and person not necessarily within, but between, established boundaries. He restlessly explores spaces between and among narratives of family, nation, career, religion, and culture. And he finds glimpses of an elusive and wounded subject--himself. A strong sense of longing, a sense of not quite being at home--a type of woundedness--pervades his story. Such places reveal themselves to him not as deficits, not something to be corrected and set straight; instead, he sees them as a sort of home, despite their shaky, between nature. In these spaces, new contours of self, others, and world have opened to him.

Foreword

(wrote the foreword)

Jay Tolson

“Memories are interesting things—vivid, happy, sad, traumatic, like yesterday, or gone forever—shared within human experience. Dupuy wonderfully gathers again moments of perception and feeling as he searches through the desire, flow, and energy of a lifetime. Finding the space between his recollections and one’s own offers the reader a better view and awareness of a space for getting on in this world.”

Gene Beyt

“Edward Dupuy’s Reflections on a Road Between is an enchanting autobiography written through a kaleidoscopic lens of memory, literature, theology, poetry, and history—all interwoven in a thoughtful tapestry of family, study, work, travel, golf, friendship, and more. Dealing deftly with influences ancient, modern, and personal, Dupuy guides us along a perceptive path between memory and the mystery we call ‘life.’ Here is a well told story on a road worth taking.”

Franklin Wilson

“Occasionally, we encounter someone humble, thoughtful, and intriguing in life, but busyness keeps us from coming to know them. In Recollections on a Road Between, Edward Dupuy, just such a man, generously welcomes us to the arc and trials of his life. We journey with him across the globe and encounter a reflective and infectious humanity and perhaps discover within ourselves a willingness to reside in a ‘space between.’”

Robert Green

“These remarkable memoirs and personal reflections by scholar, poet and former Catholic seminarian Edward Dupuy are marked by honesty, wit, and an abiding faith in the meaning to be found in the varied experiences of life. Sensitively and perceptively written, they portray the author’s intellectual and personal grappling with his own questions and answers about his direction in life, relationships, vocational pursuits and political outlooks—at the same time implicitly inviting his readers to similarly examine their own questions and answers. A fresh and engaging Confessions for our time!”
