Publisher's Description

In this book, Toddy Hoare looks at the symbolism in St. John’s Gospel of the bread and wine as the background to Holy Communion, focusing on the cup, which in the Old Testament is a cup of wrath and judgment but which in the New Testament becomes a cup of blessing and salvation. The writer’s deceit is to link the cup and the contents of wine to the cup the groom drinks and breaks at a Jewish wedding, taking the idea from Christ describing himself as the groom and us, the church, as his bride.

Foreword

(wrote the foreword)

Peter Sedgwick

“Toddy Hoare offers a richly imaginative and deeply devotional reading of St. John’s Gospel, drawing out its depth with a pastor’s heart and an artist’s eye. His reflections invite readers into the mystery of Christ’s self-giving love. This book will inspire prayerful reflection and encourage a renewed appreciation of the eucharistic life at the heart of Christian faith.”

Simon Jones

“Reading St. John’s Gospel through the lens of Jesus as the divine bridegroom offers fertile ground for preachers, pastors, and disciples alike. In this book the author offers fruitful meditations on this theme, drawing on his own experience, his love of storytelling, symbolism, and allusion, and above all his love of the Gospel itself.”
