Publisher's Description
This is a comprehensive glossary of genres and formulas covering every passage in the Hebrew Bible. It has over 1,100 entries, more than 500 of which have brief bibliographies. The complete bibliography at the back includes more than 1,500 works. There is a chapter giving an overview of the Hebrew Bible (Tanak), which enables the reader to find a glossary entry connected to a particular passage. The chapter on narratives primarily uses a content-based approach (distinguishing annunciation narratives, covenant establishment narratives, festival observance narratives, and so forth) which makes it especially useful for pastors and rabbis. There are also chapters on legal genres, on wisdom genres, on Psalms and Lamentations, on lists, on prophetic speech, and more.

“These extensive volumes are more than encyclopedic glossaries on genres and forms. Each genre is meticulously cataloged and judiciously delineated, as though with lively, accessible conversations. If a master-chef detects both unique and similar ingredients in culinary art, Finlay—carrying the legacies of von Rad, Knierim, and Sweeney—masterfully dissects and correlates various genres in biblical texts so that readers can learn anew and appreciate generic functions both in piecemeal and whole. These genre studies will provide essential exegetical treats to scholars and preachers alike.”
“Most reference sources focus on what the Bible says. These volumes take a new and welcome approach, shedding light on the manifold ways in which the biblical authors make their point and drive it home. Timothy Finlay’s detailed and comprehensive work is an invaluable resource for scholars and students, religious professionals, and lay persons interested in exploring the rich and diverse world of the Old Testament’s literary expression.”
