Publisher's Description

This book is meant to provide a sympathetic and critical mutual conversation between Muslims and Christians concerning their deepest and most formative beliefs and doctrines. Written from a Christian perspective, this comparative theological exercise will put Christian doctrines in a dialogue with Muslim ones. What makes this comparative conversation meaningful and significant is that basically all core Christian beliefs from revelation to God, to creation and humanity, to Jesus and S/spirit, to salvation (submission), to community, and to the “end” have a clearly defined corresponding Muslim formulation. Even when at times quite radically different, each of these two sister faiths’ “theologies” has a common basis in the Jewish Torah and (to a lesser extent) in the Christian New Testament.

“In We Believe: Muslims and Christians in Conversation about Faith, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen offers an accessible introduction to Islamic faith and theology marked by intellectual rigor, theological clarity, and genuine hospitality. The book demonstrates how deep Christian conviction and serious engagement with Islamic traditions and Muslims can coexist without polemic, reductionism, or compromise. It is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and practitioners of comparative theology and interfaith relations.”

Jose Abraham

“Once again, Professor Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen has created a wonderful work on Christian-Muslim interfaith dialogue. Unlike many of his more academic and demanding monographs, this book is accessible, serving as a helpful introduction for any layperson interested in Christianity, Islam, or other faiths or belief systems seeking to engage in inter-religious conversation. Don’t be deceived by its approachable tone; it still covers all the key theological topics in depth. Above all, the book was written with the most commendable goal of promoting world peace!”

Jacob Chengwei Feng

“In Indonesia and other Muslim-majority countries, Christian witness demands understanding and honest friendship with Muslims. Kärkkäinen gives readers a clear and honest guide that holds firm Christian conviction while honoring the integrity of the Islamic faith. His ‘interpathy’ approach—temporarily inhabiting the other’s space—models how to engage differences without hostility. I wish every missionary coming to our context would read this first. It would correct unhelpful assumptions and strengthen genuine gospel witness.”
