Publisher's Description
Over the past several decades there have been three significant shifts in youth culture; each new shift brought with it different values and priorities in the lives of teens. Youth ministries adapted and responded to the first two shifts, but we’re missing the boat on the third. The result? Youth ministry isn’t addressing the realities and needs of today’s youth culture. After nearly three decades in youth ministry, Mark Oestreicher has lived through a lot of those shifts himself. In recent years, he’s found himself wondering what needs to change, especially since so much of what we’re doing in youth ministry today is not working. In Youth Ministry 3.0, youth workers will explore, along with Marko and the voices of other youth workers, why we need change in youth ministry, from a ministry moving away from a dependence on programs, to one that is focused on communion and mission. They’ll get a quick history of youth ministry over the last fifty years. And they’ll help dream about what changes need to take place in order to create the next phase of youth ministry — the future that needs to be created for effective ministry to students.

“As a long-term voice of and for youth ministry, Mark Oestreicher has done what few leaders at his level allow themselves to do: Change. This manifesto represents a long-brewing unsettling inside of the president of Youth Specialties. He has listened hard, thought carefully, and let himself be pushed around by new thoughts, ideas, perspectives, and convictions. In Youth Ministry 3.0, Marko lets us in on where this process has taken him. As the nature of adolescence as shifted and as careful study has been overshadowed by populist expertise, this book slows us all down enough to help us remember that ministry to kids belongs to Jesus, and not to us. Well done, and thank you.”
“My first contact with Youth Ministry 3.0 was when Marko read me a short excerpt to punch up a point he was making during a lively dialogue. I was immediately sure that this book would contribute something unique and provocative to contemporary conversations about youth ministry. Marko is a gifted writer with a sharp eye for detail, a well-stamped passport testifying to a worldwide perspective, and a network of future-thinking power brokers—I can’t imagine seriously considering the direction and practice of youth ministry without engaging this book.”
“I finished reading this book in one sitting—I couldn’t stop. My palms were sweaty. My eyes filled with tears at different points. My heart raced. I felt a deep sense of ‘yes’ from the Holy Spirit. Youth Ministry 3.0 is a prophetic voice to the church. In it are conversations we’re having almost on a daily basis. It’s validating. It gives us something in writing that we’ve just been talking about. It gives us language for some things we’ve had no idea how to express. And, in my opinion, this isn’t just a youth ministry book. It’s a CHURCH book.”
“What Mark Oestreicher has done in Youth Ministry 3.0 is profound. Both historic and prophetic, he shows us where modern American student ministry has been and where it should go. As readers, we’re in capable hands with Marko at the wheel, and he steers us (and youth ministry) in a wonderful and needed new direction. This book is a bellwether of youth ministry’s future.”
