Arius on Carillon Avenue

Theology

“With characteristic learning and insight, Peter Carnley explores the curious and problematic rise of a tendency in evangelical theology to foreground power and hierarchy, heavenly and ecclesial, in a way that threatens the very integrity of Christian witness to the God of self-giving love. Provocative as well as circumspect, this book amounts to a whistle-blowing exercise on the subversion of the doctrine of the Trinity going on behind the smoke machines and praise bands of contemporary evangelical Anglicanism.”

Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity

Theology

“This new study of baptism may be unique in exploring the early history of Christian initiation not through authors or ideas but symbols. Drawing material and literary evidence together in a deft and unprecedented way, Jensen reveals how early Christians themselves experienced their rite of initiation. The book, like the rite, is rich and diverse; it demonstrates the variety of baptismal images and understandings that could coexist and catalyze one another. Washing, community membership, illumination, rebirth, and new creation are all vividly drawn in word and image. This array of fundamental images and their ritualization provides new insight not only into baptism but also into the ways Christian identity itself was created and expressed.”

Breaking Bread

History & Biography

“Alistair Stewart’s work is always rigorous as well as creative, and the deployment of his acute interpretive skills to the question of eucharistic origins in such a thorough way as this is very welcome. Even where we disagree, his probing analysis does not fail to shed new light, and this account will now be a necessary point of reference for the topic.”

Christ and the Council

History & Biography

“Just in time for its seventeen hundredth anniversary, Ben Wyatt’s account of the Council of Nicaea is both ‘ripping yarn’ and serious survey. Those looking for the theological equivalent of a page-turner will find this an edifying and engaging work that gives new relevance to ancient doctrine.”

Living Out of Control

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Rodney Clapp's account of a "waning" Christendom--changed, not ended--provides a sobering yet insightful, and ultimately encouraging, agenda for a changed church in a difficult world. Clapp envisages a different Christian practice, setting aside both the paternalism of past social witness and the attendant objectification of creation itself, in favor of recovering a "resonance" fitting to the needs of the world and to the changed reality of a Christian faith that has to rethink itself amid the secular. This significant, even profound achievement is the sketch of a Christian ethic that remains engaged and relevant to contemporary social and political practice, while avoiding the compromises of Christian nationalism as well as the self-indulgence of some "post-Christian" postures.”

Recovering Communion in a Violent World

Preaching & Worship

“How to celebrate Holy Communion without profiting from the violence done to Jesus? Christopher Grundy’s book brings together deep engagement with recent scholarship on the biblical and historical roots of eucharistic meals, with a profound pastoral and social concern. It will speak powerfully to readers who have stumbled over the misuse of the Eucharist as a symbol of violence, as well as those simply open to finding fresh and engaging possibilities in their celebration of Holy Communion.”

The Apostolic Tradition

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This edition deserves to become the first place scholars and students look to engage this enormously important but still misunderstood text. Taking the latest discoveries and scholarly developments into full consideration, it offers a reliable text and authoritative notes. As usual, Bradshaw’s enormous erudition is clothed in an accessible and straightforward presentation that will become the standard reference for many.”

Whiteout

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Lyn Brakeman invites the reader into a frank and fearless conversation in which an array of anecdotes from her own life speak to the times she has lived in, and that we all live in now. A memoir in many acts, this engaging and at times confronting book also amounts to a narrative manifesto against racism and all forms of oppression.”
