Children & Youth
“Really funny. More than that, it was hella original. We see a fair number of food related books for kids in a given year, and from time to time they pinpoint foods that kids don’t like to eat, but nine times out of ten that food is broccoli. Borsch, in comparison, is colorful and not something your average American kid runs into quite as often. But because Yevgenia Nayberg grew up in Ukraine, she has a different take on the old standbys.”

“Why did I like this book so much when I first saw it? Quite frankly, even before I read the translation, its topics of compassion and sacrifice and busyness were already compelling...Better still, the bridge featured is a real one and the author actually lives close to it (it's in Seoul). On top of everything else, the book makes for great conversation fodder. You can use it to ask young readers, 'What would you do? What would you say? What would the people around you say in this kind of a situation?' My favorite line in the whole thing is actually the line at the end. 'We all were late. But it's okay. Today was a good day to be late.' Now kids KNOW all about being late, after all, but the point of this book is that being late is less important than being kind.”

“This is poetry as remembrance as well as healing. It is also very much one of a kind… These poems are here so that we do not forget. These poems are here so that we always remember.”

“Poems are beautiful and meaningful...a gorgeous compendium of poetry...The art of Henriette Boerendans is positively extraordinary on the page.”

“Required reading for anyone who deigns to proffer an opinion on children's books written long ago.”

“There’s a funny surreal quality to this story, while at the same time the emotions are so real to me. It’s both telling its own story straight, while also feeling like it’s talking about a lot more than just the relationship between a woman and her cat. The art is fantastic, I love the gatefold (a rare three-page gatefold, no less!) and the simplicity of the telling. GREAT work by translator B.J. Woodstein, by the way! It really gets the tone of the book down JUST right!”

“This book in particular is an unusual little beastie, both funny and surreal, an exploration of nature and behavior.”

“This isn't the usual fare, which is precisely why I like it. . . for a story that delves deeply into the very brain of its subject without going too far, there are few titles to compete. A beautiful, odd book.”
