Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Having read David Dark's book, I want to buy stock in Religion Unlimited, meaning that David helps us see why pronouncing religion dead or dying is shortsighted. The writing is muscular yet graceful, and the content is wise and insightful. You couldn't ask more from a book... and you couldn't ask for a more important subject.”
Christian Living
“Tom Sine's new book is a great introduction to his life-long message of making change and seizing opportunities. It's as fresh and inspiring in 2016 as The Mustard Seed Conspiracy was in 1981.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“I’m in the middle of planning a big family trip to Yellowstone National Park. It’s daunting! The place is beautiful, I know, but it’s big and it’s hard to know where to start. It’s the same with the Bible. That’s why a guide like Charlotte Coyle is so helpful. In Living in The Story, she gives us a guided tour of this amazing library, helping us see its beauty, history, and mystery too.”
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“Depression is far more common in our churches than many of us realize, and too often our churches unintentionally make the suffering even worse. In Losing God, Matt Rogers courageously tells the story of his depression with unflinching honesty, theological insight and deep human sensitivity. The book will bring hope to those who carry the weight of depression . . . and it will help the rest of us to share and lift the emotional burden others carry instead of adding to it. A needed book, beautifully written, from a promising new writer.”
Love in a Time of Climate Change
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“I am so grateful for thoughtful, well-informed spiritual leaders like Sharon Delgado who are not only educating people but recruiting people for wise, just, and compassionate action in our climate-changed world.”
Christian Living
“Our culture brainwashes us to think that greed is the motivation that drives us, but this book offers a powerful alternative message—the transformative power of generosity. This message could literally change the world, beginning with your life and mine.”
Christian Living
“If you believe, as I do, that love is the heart of Jesus’ message and should be the point of the Christian life, then you’ll be surprised to see how few books there are that aim specifically to help you become a better practitioner of love. And you’ll be thrilled when a book like this comes along—well-written, inspiring and practical, deeply engaging with Scripture, and joyfully celebrating the primacy of love.”
Mimetic Theory and Biblical Interpretation
Theology
“The Gospel is on a collision course with Christianity, Michael Hardin says. It’s time to leave the two-faced God of conventional Christianity behind and discover (at last!) the nonviolent character of God revealed in the one face of the crucified Christ. Sound intriguing? Don’t miss Mimetic Theory and Biblical Interpretation. It’s bold, clear, and needed now more than ever.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“I can't think of a single person who wouldn't be helped by Phileena Heuertz's Mindful Silence. But people like me—who write, speak, and preach for a living—will find special gifts here because the deepest currents of awakening and discovery only begin to flow in us through the intentional, practiced silence of the contemplative way.”
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“What happens when a gifted travel writer combines her interests in travel, religion, and death? The result is a fascinating book called Near the Exit , with trips to Rome, a Day of the Dead celebration, pyramids in Egypt and Mexico, nursing homes, a Maori ceremony in New Zealand, a farm in Iowa, and more. Beautiful writing about a trip we all will someday take.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Lots of people are walking away from church, and years of pain give them good reasons for doing so. But others are processing their pain in ways that help them imagine a better tomorrow for Christian congregations. That's what Nancy Beach and Samantha Beach Kiley do in Next Sunday. Each page rings with honesty, humility, and hard-won hope. The book feels like a generational passing of a baton, and that's something that older and younger readers will benefit from. Thanks to this mother-daughter writing team!”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Here are three reasons to buy, read, and widely distribute John Burke’s wonderful new book. First, Chapter 7 alone is worth twice the price of the book. Second, so are Chapters 8 and 9. Third, we need thousands of churches to follow the example of Gateway Community Church in creating a grace- and gospel-friendly church culture. This book is a treasure—fresh, intelligent, practical, deep, and wise.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Most people think ‘deep’ and ‘practical’ can’t go together, as if being practical meant being shallow. Joe Myers brings the two together as well as anyone I’ve ever read. Looking back on twenty-four years of church planting and pastoral ministry, I wish I had thoroughly digested Organic Community before I got started. It would have saved so much wasted energy—mine, and those whose lives I foolishly tried to ‘master plan.’ Beneath its simplicity and practicality lie real depth, and from its depth will flow creative, practical action that will make a difference for years to come. This is a book I will reread and widely recommend.”
Theology
“I am a great admirer of WJ de Kock. His reflections on the dysfunctions of Christian faith in apartheid South Africa are fascinating as a historical study but they also have a powerful message for today's Christians around the world, especially, I think, in the U.S. Wynand calls for a generous and regenerative theology and this book embodies that theology on every page.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“As someone raised in traditional Christian culture regarding sexuality, I applaud Mihee Kim-Kort’s new book, Outside the Lines. It invites us all, whatever our sexual self-understanding, to ponder afresh the wonder of what it means to be embodied humans with attractions and desires. It presents queerness as a needed theological viewpoint with unique gifts to offer. And beyond that, this book is beautifully, clearly, courageously written.”
Preaching to Those Walking Away
Preaching & Worship
“I would wish this book on every seminarian, preacher, and teacher everywhere. Intelligent, passionate, clear, and practical... it's just the guidance we need right now.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“When people ask what has been the single most important personal discipline in my own spiritual life, I always point them toward something I learned from an old classic back in my college years: practicing God’s presence. But I’ve never had a readable contemporary book to recommend that would make this practice more widely accessible to people today, until now. Greg Boyd’s book will help a new generation of readers discover a spiritual secret that is as simple as it is profound, as transformative as it is within anyone’s reach. Highly recommended.”
