75 Masterpieces Every Christian Should Know
Arts & Literature
“Terry Glaspey seems to know a bit about everything and a lot about the things that matter most. I would read anything he wrote, but this unique volume surpassed my great expectations. If you enjoy pondering the connections between faith, art, culture, and daily discipleship, you will adore this. 75 Masterpieces Every Christian Should Know is itself a masterpiece. Who else can tell you about a painting by Caravaggio, a novel by Jane Austen, and a live album by Johnny Cash all in the same book? Thanks be to God for Glaspey's clear faith, informed knowledge, and winsome writing that can help us glean spiritual insight in cultural projects from to Dante to Dylan, from Rembrandt to The Tree of Life.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“This book will open your ears to the hope and homecoming embedded in the Scripture's story, with a chorus of voices serving as an encore to the vivid work of Brian Walsh. You should take in this show, and then read it again. It's that good. And that important.”
History & Biography
“long memoir showing the redemptive power of play. This is a remarkable book for sports fans or anyone who has longed to explore her own field of dreams.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In my nearly twenty-five years of book selling I have seen few books which can rival Colossians Remixed for its sheer Christian audacity, its deep desire to be faithful in reading the Word in light of the burning questions of our time. Readers will be sure to be stunned--pondering, reacting, struggling with this fresh take on Scripture, as they are led to good insights about how to live out a transforming discipleship. If this proposal is taken seriously, the Bible will be heard anew, lives will be changed, and God will be pleased.”
Preaching & Worship
“Surely one of the best worship aids and liturgical resources in many a year, to be celebrated as a publishing win in 2018.”
Faithful Witness in a Fractured World
Christian Living
“There are dozens of good books challenging us to care more about God's world, to be active, to make a difference. This one, though, is different—spectacularly so! In Faithful Witness in a Fractured World, Johnson and Snarr have given us a remarkably fresh and gracious guide to Christian social action by tracing the lives of a handful of what Shane Claiborne has called ‘ordinary radicals.’ In stories that are wonderfully told and prose that moves from elegant to sharp to cleverly witty, this book invites us all to learn how to be more civically-minded, how to care more for the common good, and how to emulate these friends of theirs who model this messy, glorious adventure of being God's agents of justice and peace. I am confident that there will be readers whose lives will be decisively altered for the better because of reading Faithful Witness. Quit complaining about ‘crappy Christians’—find some friends, read this together, and live into a better story!”
Good News for Anxious Christians, expanded ed.
Christian Living
“Tremendously rich and thoughtful and wonderfully written. . . . This is solid pastoral theology, inviting deeper and more mature thinking about the slogans and clichés we too often hear.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Papers and professors, labs and lectures. Few Christian books for college students even mention the central aspect of college life—academics and course work. This one, though, lays it all out, brings it all together. It is easy to read, fun, funny, and full of robust insight. There is nothing like it in print. Students who desire to truly live out the implications of their faith in the classroom setting will find this book to be an extraordinary help; campus ministers or faithful faculty wanting to assist their young friends in serving Christ in the classroom will want to have a stack of these on hand to pass out. It is on that short list of must-reads, essential for grooming Christian faithfulness in the college years.”
Life's Too Short to Pretend You're Not Religious
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“This stuff is splendid, and it is David Dark more joyous and (dare I say it?) more upbeat than ever before. This is sheer gift. Pay attention.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“It seems to me — and this good story captures it — that learning to love and serve real people in a real congregation in a real place is most of what a pastor does. Sure, there are programs and worship services and classes and meetings, and it all matters. But this vocation of mediating God’s presence through affectionate solidarity with those God gives to you, being a pastor, is what congregations most need. It is touching, human work, which is why this book, even though some of it is out and out hilarious, is heartbreaking as well.”
Children & Youth
“This is destined to become a classic in the genre. There is simply no other book of which we are aware on the topic of Catholic Saints that is so informative and so exquisitely captivating with this realistic, superb portrait art. In a way this is not a typical children's book, although the writing is upbeat and lovely. It is designed to be read together, to help encourage families to read about saints (from history or from the Bible.) The art is stunning, and somewhat diverse. Besides a wild, wild-eyed, long-haired John the Baptist, on the other page there is a big bug, I'm guessing, uh, a locust. Yep, there are these smaller depictions and insets. A few of the pictures are edgy and iconographic, others (like the cover) more realistic. The picture of blessed Franz Jaegerstaetter hugging his wife over his scrippled letters is heartbreakingly powerful. There is a great bibliography at the end. An excellent resource for families with older kids. Or no kids. It's amazing.”
History & Biography
“This collection of memories is a must-read to help see how Harry grew up in the bustling urban landscape of mid-twentieth-century Newark, and to learn about his remarkable background and his growth into the calm and curious person he is today. With his sense of wonder and the Divine hovering near all things, it is no wonder Harry is a bit of mystic. He gently ponders some of life's deepest mysteries here, but he guides us there by way of stories, nicely told, captivating and memorable.”
Christian Living
“In a year with a handful of very good social justice resources, this one rises above them all. A must-read, beautiful, very insightful, and important book of truly lasting significance.”
The Sacredness of Questioning Everything
“David Dark is a brilliant and respected cultural critic, and here, in this new work, he has done something that very few evangelical writers have done: he truly invites us—no, he calls us—to the holy task of thinking all manner of things through, of saying yes and no, of questioning and seeking and discerning what is most true. We need this kind of feisty, literate, and (dare I say it?) prophetic call, and we will be better—as people and as a Christian community and as a culture— if we take up this unsettling and liberating challenge.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“If you are a clergy person, you will love this. If you know pastors well, you'll get it. If you want to understand what ministers go through — their inner lives, their joys and frustrations, the strains on their marriages, their fears and foibles — this is a must-read.”
Work, Money & Leadership
“Visions of Vocation will be considered a classic of our time, inspiring many to care more deeply and live out their own passions with vitality and integrity.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Immensely rich insight, written nicely by a learned and penetrating thinker. This may be the best Christian reflection on the deeper questions around globalization, global culture wars and the great clash of civilizations I've yet seen. . . . If you've only got time for one book of this sort, pass by Chomsky and Perle. Skip narrow-minded ideologues like Michael Moore and Ann Coulter and read Meic Pearse. He is a thoughtful Christian who brings theological acumen and global sensitivities to his critique of modernity, and offers profound Christian insight as he unpacks the deep divides between the West and the rest.”
