“What Dr. Shanley has written is not scholarship, it is an act of imagination. Given the culture of Christianity today, it might be an act of courageous imagination. He is following a well-worn tradition of ancient and medieval European folk tales—a kind of Christian midrash, that seeks to bring the distant historical Jesus into contemporary focus.”
