2 Kings

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Those—like me—who greatly value John Woodhouse’s commentaries on 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 Kings will be delighted to hold this volume for 2 Kings in their hands. This commentary completes Woodhouse’s excellent series on the books of Samuel and Kings and continues at the same high standard. The main text of the commentary combines both Woodhouse’s characteristic clarity with his evident gifts for storytelling. The invaluable endnotes explain and defend why he reads the text as he does and engage thoughtfully with a range of other scholars and commentators. For me, as a preacher, these four commentaries are my first ‘go to’ volumes. And very often I feel no need to look further afield for help.”

2 Samuel

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This book is the ideal commentary for a preacher. It summarizes wide and deep scholarship clearly and concisely, offers perceptive and persuasive judgments on matters of translation and interpretation, and contains thoughtful suggestions for hearing these narratives as a part of Christian Scripture fulfilled in great David’s greater Son. It is a marvelous resource.”

A Heart Aflame for God

Theology

“A Heart Aflame for God is an excellent and timely book. Bingham speaks to the longings we all have to grow in grace and the knowledge of God. He treats us to a feast of scriptural answers, drawing especially from the Reformers and Puritans. He writes carefully, pastorally, and convincingly, focusing especially on what he calls the ‘Reformation triangle’ of Scripture, meditation, and prayer. He also gives thoughtful and timely warnings about some common errors. I recommend this book very warmly.”

Can We Trust the Gospels?

Apologetics

“This book is superb, a simply wonderful resource. I have bought five copies and will buy more to give away. Clear, insightful, scholarly, thought provoking—just the kind of book to give to believers and skeptical friends.”

Christ in Conflict

Theology

“Every thoughtful Christian ought to read this classic exposition of evangelical essentials. Though written more than forty years ago, its central message stands and is needed today more than ever. John Stott expounds persuasively, generously, lucidly and with penetrating insight what it means to be faithful to Jesus Christ. This is a brilliant book.”

God Alone

Theology

“Like J. I. Packer's classic Knowing God, this gem of a book combines deep theology, clearly explained, with searching pastoral application. Some doctrinal books lack pastoral application, and some pastoral works are weak on theological foundations. This book has both. My mind was expanded and my heart warmed. I warmly commend it.”

How to Be a Pastor

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This profoundly heartwarming book will refresh the spirits of many pastors and aspiring pastors. It comes from another age and a different culture. But it breathes the love of the Savior through the affections of the pastor. I warmly commend this beautiful book to pastors and all who care about pastoral leadership in our churches.”

Judges and Ruth

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I have been instructed and often moved by these scholarly and pastorally perceptive expositions. Barry Webb opens up the texts carefully and accessibly, and does so with the sensitivity of an experienced pastor. Such pastoral scholarship is powerful and edifying.”

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“To some people, the word liturgy conjures up visions of dry-as-dust formal religion devoid of life and warmth. The irony is that evangelical informality, by which we often seem to say to God the first words that come into our heads, can result in dry-as-dust informal religion, sucked empty of depth and nourishment. There is a growing hunger for good liturgy. As a glad user of Jonny Gibson’s earlier book Be Thou My Vision, I warmly commend these deeply scriptural aids to remembering Christ in his death, his resurrection, his ascension, and the outpouring of his Spirit. They will do your heart good.”

Proclaiming the Word

Christian Living

“Here is a book for every preacher to own, read, and digest. David Jackman distills a lifetime of experience as a preacher, a teacher of preachers worldwide, and a pastor to preachers. As we would expect from Jackman, the book is crystal clear in its instruction, abundantly well illustrated in its examples, and deeply biblical in its content. It also breathes the warm heart of one who knows what it is to struggle with preaching and to encourage others in this work. I particularly love chapter 16 with its guidance on the appropriate tones for preaching; only an experienced pastor could write this as Jackman does. I am so grateful to him for writing this book.”

Songs of the Son

Theology

“This delightful book is beautifully written, rooted in careful scholarship, and pastorally sensitive. One does not have to agree with every detail of the author’s readings to appreciate their aid in embracing the Psalms in deeply Christian ways. The way Stevens moves to and fro between the Psalms and the letter to the Hebrews is a profoundly refreshing model of how to read Psalms in the light of the whole Bible.”

The Beauty and Power of Biblical Exposition

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Preaching faithfully and well is the challenge of a lifetime. We need all the help we can get. There is much wisdom here, the fruit of long experience and careful study, all compiled with warmth and clarity. This book will be a helpful resource for preachers and for those who seek to train preachers.”

The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission

Evangelism & Missions

“Some years ago John Dickson ran an excellent evangelism training course in our local church. The course material—now available in this book—is biblical, liberating, and practical. I commend it as a stimulating resource for congregations and church leadership teams.”

The Lord of Psalm 23

Theology

“A pastor’s heart breathes through this book. Just as the psalm’s own words are heartwarming and beautiful, so on the lips of a caring pastor these meditations warm the heart and delight the soul. They did me good. They will do you good.”

The Path to Being a Pastor

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This clear-thinking and realistic book covers all the essential matters that a man considering pastoral ministry ought to ponder. I appreciated not only the biblical comprehensiveness but also the very practical rootedness in the actual life of churches. This will be an accessible and useful resource for a man to work through slowly, perhaps with his wife and a group of trusted friends. Jamieson is a sure-footed, measured, and well-informed guide.”
