Glocal

Christian Living

“My heart resonates strongly with the message of this book. It packs a powerful prophetic critique, but does so with the gentleness of Christ. At the Lausanne Congress in Cape Town 2010, I pleaded for a twenty-first century reformation through a return to humility, integrity, and simplicity, renouncing the idolatries of power, success, and greed. Rick Love calls for a reformation in very similar terms, urging churches, individuals, and agencies who are committed to serving the mission of God in the world to seek a restored integrity, identity, and authenticity in their witness to Jesus in our ‘glocal’ world.”

God Draws Near

Theology

“Collin Cornell eloquently and prudently warns us of the dangers of theologies of mission that exclusively focus on the dramatic-narrative nature of the canonical framework of scripture. A personal danger is the threat of obsolescence within a narrative obsessed with just ‘getting the job done for God.’ A hermeneutical danger is that we may lose sight of the gloriously multiplex nature of the texts themselves and the ‘geometric’ way the Bible can draw and redraw its lines and angles in all kinds of intersecting and recurring directions. Complementary to those who portray the Bible as the grand narrative of God’s mission from creation to new creation, Cornell rightly highlights and insists that God’s ultimate desire is restored in intimate communion with his people, a ‘vertical’ goal that not only is the consummation of the whole redemptive story (God dwelling with us) but is anticipated at many points along the way—physically, for example, in the Tabernacle/temple, textually in the Song of Songs, and supremely, of course, in the heaven-and-earth union of the Incarnation. For this thoroughly biblical reminder, the book is a welcome contribution to the ongoing discipline of missional hermeneutics.”

God Is Stranger

Christian Living

“Has God become as familiar and forgettable as a fridge magnet? That's the danger Krish Kandiah faces up to in this wonderfully readable and very challenging book. Bible stories come to life as Krish tells them afresh, richly illustrated with personal experience and social relevance, and in each case the living God turns up—strange, dangerous, and, like Aslan, not safe but good. Read it and be prepared, as he says, to 'replace a simplistic, domesticated, anemic, fridge magnet understanding of God with a more fierce, awe-inspiring, and majestic God that is true to the Bible and big enough for the whole of our lives.'”

Half the Church

Women

“Carolyn Custis James combines passion for the suffering women of our world with rigorous biblical observation and exegesis. The result is a prophetic word that challenges both our apathy and ignorance in the face of terrifying facts, and our theological shallowness in the face of abundant biblical teaching. The title and subtitle only tell half the story. For this is a book for the whole church and urges us to see God's global vision for men and women. Half the church badly needs to think again about the message of this book. So does the other half. Otherwise both halves are the tragic losers.”

Here in Spirit

Christian Living

“John Stott began every day from his waking moment with a prayer to each person of the Holy Trinity, specifically greeting the Holy Spirit and asking him to go on growing his fruit in John’s life. And God answered that prayer abundantly! This book would commend such practice, with its strong call to know the Spirit of God in much more personal and intimate terms than before. I am grateful for Jonathan Dodson’s challenge. His book is very easy to read, but not at all just an easy read. I have been reminded of things I’d forgotten and rebuked for things I’ve neglected. The book has blessed my life this very day and will impact the sermon I have to preach in ten days' time. That’s because it is resonant with multiple scriptures, rich in honest, personal experience, and constantly relevant to everyday life.”

How to Preach the Prophets for All Their Worth

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This is one of the best books I have encountered on how to grasp and communicate the scope and passion of the prophetic books of the Bible. While rich in content and overflowing with wisdom, it is delightfully easy to read, absorb, and put into practice. It will be enormously helpful to anyone determined to ‘rightly handle the word of truth’ that comes to us through the wild profusion and transforming power of prophetic speech.”

How to Read Daniel

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Tremper Longman III provides the ideal companion for reading the book of Daniel. He helps us understand the relationship between the cheering stories of the first half and the weird visions of the second half, by showing how both were intended to encourage God's people in the midst of suffering and persecution. He helps us avoid simplistic messages from the stories and fanciful messages from the visions. Balanced, informative, and readable, this is a great tool for any preacher or Bible study leader.”

Introducing Biblical Hermeneutics

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“A magisterial textbook, but much more than a textbook. Every aspect of biblical hermeneutics is thoroughly explored in a readable, engaging, and stimulating manner. The real joy of the book, however, lies in the subtitle: ‘for hearing God in Scripture.’ This transforms the hermeneutical task from an exercise between a reader and an object (the Bible) to an encounter between a listener and a person (God). The former requires good and proper methods, tools, and wisdom, all of which matter greatly. The latter calls for response, faith, repentance, and obedience, all of which matter even more. Bartholomew not only explains both dimensions but also models them again and again. From the subtitle on the opening page, we move in a fitting way to the closing chapter on preaching the Bible. For if the ecclesial context of authentic biblical hermeneutics is crucial, then the church needs to know again the story we are in, which requires renewed commitment to preaching the whole counsel of God from the whole canon of Scripture. This book provides ample resources for just such a challenge.”

Introducing Christian Mission Today

Evangelism & Missions

“Very few people can combine multiple areas of expertise in their own thinking, let alone in a single book. Mike Goheen is one of those few. This wide-ranging survey is the fruit of a true teacher's passion for the whole scope of his discipline. We are led steadily to understand mission from its biblical foundations, in theological reflection, through millenia of historical practice, across multiple cultural and ecclesial contexts, to the most urgent issues facing the church in mission today and tomorrow. Theologically enriching, reliably informative, and both conceptually and practically challenging.”

Is God a Vindictive Bully?

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Do you have a problem with something, or a lot of things, in the Old Testament? Copan has provided a virtual encyclopedia of helpful answers to frequently asked questions that trouble many readers. He tackles a whole range of objections that arise both from those who claim broad Christian allegiance to the Bible as a whole and from those who make no such claim whatsoever and use the Old Testament as a major reason for their hostility. This is a thoroughly detailed reference work that those of us who teach or preach the Old Testament will turn to frequently, or point others to, when such questions are aired. An excellent resource indeed!”

John Stott

History & Biography

“For half a century, John Stott not only participated in the growth of the global church through active ministry and personal relationships, but he also helped to facilitate and amplify the theological voice of the Majority World church and its leaders. This helpful survey by Edward Smither is a most welcome and insightful evaluation of Stott’s remarkable life and significance in the service of God’s global church.”

Just Discipleship

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“True to one of his dominant passions, Michael Rhodes has provided another feast of applied biblical insight on what it means to live out the justice of God in our fallen world. There are some whose handling of Scripture is creative but unconvincing. This book is not only freshly creative in exploring the formative power of a wide range of texts, but also challengingly convincing in applying their ethical and missional demands. Rhodes combines faithfulness to the centrality of the gospel, thorough biblical scholarship, and the courage of prophetic critique.”

Let Creation Rejoice

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“This book shows why The Cape Town Commitment, from the Third Lausanne Congress, Cape Town 2010, was absolutely right to say that 'we cannot separate our relationship to Christ from how we act in relation to the earth. For to proclaim the gospel that says "Jesus is Lord" is to proclaim the gospel that includes the earth, since Christ's Lordship is over all creation. Creation care is thus a gospel issue within the Lordship of Christ.' To be able to make such an affirmation requires that we have a fully biblical vision of what the gospel wholly and actually is, and this book richly provides such a vision with extensive biblical support. It takes us through the whole Bible story, from creation to new creation, and shows how our attitudes and actions in relation to the earth must be shaped by what God has done and will do for all creation through the Lord Jesus Christ. The book presents and explains the sober facts of our present ecological crisis. But, as the title makes clear, it does so not to induce despair, but rather to show how radical and transformative is the hope for all creation that is truly part of the 'good news' of the biblical gospel.”

Living at the Crossroads

Christian Living

“Knowing where you have come from is nearly as important as knowing where you want to go. Goheen and Bartholomew trace the deep roots of our contemporary Western worldview in that kind of easy, broad-brush comprehensiveness that makes one exclaim, ‘Yes of course, that’s exactly the way things are—and why!’ But alongside that, they do an equally good job in presenting the biblical worldview as the story that tells it like it really is, for life, the universe, and everything. That’s the way things are—but as God sees them. The combination powerfully forces us to see the dissonance between the two, and the stark choice that Christians need to make. Which story do we live by? Which road do we travel from the crossroads? But the book is far from all theory. It grounds the challenge of living out the Christian story in a variety of very practical, very up-to-date, areas of life in the world around us. This is a book filled with eye-opening insight, biblical nourishment, practical challenge, and robust hope. It turns the mission of God into our mission in the world and compels us to make some radical choices.”

Luther and the Jews

History & Biography

“Prepare to be shocked. Prepare to be grieved. Prepare to be challenged to the core. . . . Harvey’s timely book exposes with documented clarity the horrid truth of what Luther thought, said, preached, and wrote. . . . But Harvey’s . . . goal is much higher. . . . As a man of peace, he records also the efforts that have been made by Lutheran communities to confront and repent of this part of Luther’s legacy . . . and as a devoted follower of Yeshua . . . he longs for the deepest reconciliation that the one Lord of Jew and Gentile died and rose again to accomplish.”

Majority World Theology

Theology

“[Jesus Without Borders] provides all of us with a kind of stereophonic listening to one another across the cultures that shape us but should not define us as Christians. The whole Majority World Theology series promises to be a refreshingly reciprocal contribution to global theology.”
