Old Testament Ethics: A Guided Tour

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“What a winsomely fresh book! There is the freshness of John Goldingay's own direct translation of the text and the way he lets the Old Testament speak for itself by getting us to actually read so much of it for ourselves (fancy that for a fresh idea!). And then there is that vintage Goldingay style—straightforward and simple yet often quizzical and unexpected, humorous at times yet serious in intent, making us think afresh (whether or not we agree). We are invited into the world of Old Testament Israel as curious guests from the twenty-first century and end up asking more challenging questions about our own cultural and ethical assumptions than about theirs (which is the way it should be with the Bible). We see familiar old stories andcharacters in ways that perhaps we never thought of before and read unfamiliar texts that perhaps we never even noticed (or wincingly avoided). This book is what it says—a guided tour, designed to stimulate a desire to go back and enjoy exploring the terrain more fully.”

Old Testament Law for Christians

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Gane's comprehensive survey of Old Testament law is rich and informative on many levels. Without necessarily agreeing with every interpretation that Gane offers, I can warmly commend this book as an excellent guide for all who want to take the Torah as seriously as Jesus and Paul do but struggle to know how they can.”

Operation World

Evangelism & Missions

“An invaluable source of background information on every country we work in . . . . It has provided an objective platform of information that combines well with our own experiential perceptions in the task of strategic planning.”

Prostitutes and Polygamists

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“careful scholarly reading of the biblical texts with a light and engaging touch, while pointing the way for pastors, churches, and the rest of us to be a lot more biblical, discerning, and Christlike in what (and who) we love, and a lot more robustly honest and informed about what the Bible actually says (and doesn’t say) about sex.”

Reading Ephesians with John Stott

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“Nothing would have been more important to John Stott than to get the words of the title in the right order. We are reading the Bible with John Stott, not just reading John Stott on the Bible. For in his preaching as in his writing, John Stott's greatest gift was to help people see and hear clearly what the Bible itself actually says, and then, of course, to challenge us as to how we should respond to what we see and hear. Not all of us possess the complete works of John Stott. But we do possess the complete Bible. These sensitively edited extracts from Stott's writings will not only introduce new readers to the riches of his biblical exposition (and make them hungry for more), but will surely also introduce them to riches of God's Word they had not seen before.”

Reading Galatians with John Stott

Reading the Pentateuch as Christian Scripture

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“How I wish I’d had this book when I taught the Pentateuch years ago, and how I envy professors and students who will have the pleasure and benefit of having it as a textbook today! It is such a refreshing contrast to tedious introductions of old, with its interest-sustaining variety, exploring not only the what of the text's content but also how the different genres work and why these books matter theologically for disciples of Christ. The Pentateuch deserves such loving appreciation.”

Recovering the Full Mission of God

Evangelism & Missions

“'What God has joined together, let not man put asunder.' How frustrating it is that so much evangelical thinking about mission continues to do exactly that, splitting up word and deed, evangelism and social engagement, and then struggling to reconcile them when we should never have divorced them in the first place. This superb book by Dean Flemming leads us on a richly biblical journey that takes us back to the 'one flesh' that God intended--the integration of being, doing and speaking in the mission of God's people. It is deeply nourishing and satisfying, ranging through biblical texts from Genesis to Revelation, yet never losing the reader in technicalities or detail and consistently easy to read and practical in application. The portraits of Jesus and Paul are particularly balanced and convincing, while the lessons we learn from the early church and the book of Revelation are truly eye-opening. Pastors, missions pastors and committees, mission boards and executives--please read this book! Preach through it. Work through it with your people. It will revitalize and rebalance your understanding and practice of mission.”

Refuge Reimagined

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“It is rare to find a single book that is as rich in biblical scholarship as it is well informed on one of the most urgent global issues of our generation, and rarer still to read one that is so effective in bringing the two into such constructive, creative, and hope-filled interaction. The deployment of the Glanville brothers' respective expertise in biblical and international studies has produced this massively informative challenge, both to Christian churches and to any political leaders prepared to give them a hearing. The combination of meticulously documented research (contemporary and historical, and often painfully eye opening), with personal testimony from the lived experience of the Kinbrace Community in Vancouver, gives voiceto an authenticity and truth that must challenge our consciences and our actions.”

Reimagining Biblical Politics

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This lively and timely book fills out in wonderful biblical detail what I sketched in broad and aspirational strokes in my chapter 'Politics and the Nations' in Old Testament Ethics for the People of God, but does it much better than I could, not least by decisively demolishing the idea that Jesus and the New Testament had nothing to say about 'politics.' The breadth of biblical sources and the subtlety of how they are used are richly enlightening and challenging. Rhodes rightly does not tell us what or who should get our political support, but he invites and excites us to find the Bible showing us, far more than we imagined, how we should think and act in the political sphere in ways that embody God's own priorities and the way of Christ, the world's true King.”

Serving God Under Siege

History & Biography

“God’s sovereign ability to bring good out of evil, without denying or diminishing the reality of evil itself, is a biblical truth as old as Joseph’s assurance to his brothers (Gen. 50:20) and as cosmically powerful as the cross itself. Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression, invasion, annexation and incalculable death and destruction against Ukraine, ranks among the most flagrantly unjust of all the terrifying evils so far in this twenty-first century. What good can possibly triumph over such evil? What possible mustard seeds of God’s kingdom can flourish in such poisoned soil? Valentyn Syniy’s searing but hope-filled story shows that they can and do. His voice speaks for many of his Ukrainian sisters and brothers, seminary leaders, pastors and teachers, who have courageously stayed and faithfully served their people with the hands and feet of Jesus. Even in the midst of intense personal suffering and bereavement, relentless and sleepless bombardment, and acute theological questioning, their mission has not changed, and their voice cries out to God and to the rest of God’s family. It’s a voice we must hear and a cry we must make our own.”

Stott on the Christian Life

History & Biography

“Why should anyone read John Stott these days? Tim Chester’s book provides abundant reason and motivation. While not a biography, it tracks the sources and maturing of Stott’s thinking along the historic contours of his immense lifetime’s ministry, and across the breadth of his spiritual passions and intellectual profundity. Thoroughly researched and meticulously documented, this is a superb introduction to one of the greatest yet most humble leaders God has ever gifted to his church—comprehensively worthy of the man himself while glorifying Christ, as he would have wanted. If you knew John Stott, relish the spiritual challenge and tonic of journeying with him through this book. If you didn’t, start here! You will be enriched, informed, and inspired.”

The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission

Evangelism & Missions

“from start to finish, moving backwards and forwards within the Bible and between the Bible and abundant “case studies” in today’s world. The book’s second great feature is that it is balanced—showing us in just how many ways the Bible speaks about what we can do to promote the gospel. Everything from being bold to being beautiful is there (yes, even that is biblical), from doing good to doing worship. Here is a book that takes us beyond merely talking about the gospel (though without ever leaving that behind) to really living it, and also makes sure that when we do talk about the gospel, we actually have in mind something that the gospel writers and the apostle Paul would recognize. Biblical, balanced, and—well, brilliant.”

The Book of Job and the Mission of God

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This wide-ranging and insightful survey illuminates rich biblical themes that undergird missional theology and praxis. This is a major and welcome contribution to both a biblical theology of mission and a missional hermeneutic of Scripture.”

The Cape Town Commitment: A Confession of Faith, A Call to Action

Evangelism & Missions

“Every reader will be pleasantly surprised and grateful to find extensive resources they never knew about. The Cape Town Commitment unites the voices of evangelical leaders from 198 nations. So as new editions emerge, I am confident that the editors and publisher will be keen to include even more works from the non-western world. This is a hugely welcome start to an ongoing international collaborative process.”

The Core of the Christian Faith

Christian Living

“One of the most down-to-earth, practical guidebooks I have read on how all so-called ordinary Christians can and should be playing their part in God’s mission.”

The Decalogue

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I grew up in a generation of children required to memorize and recite the Ten Commandments by heart. They set the shape of accepted Christian ethics. Later, I visited many churches with the Ten Commandments inscribed on the walls but lacking the vital context of the opening affirmation of God's redeeming grace: 'I am the LORD your God who brought you up out of the house of bondage'—law without gospel. David Baker's timely book challenges us to reconsider the foundational place of the Decalogue in Christian personal and public ethics. But he is also careful to note the context—both the biblical context of God's people's obedience as a grateful response to saving grace, and the surrounding context of ancient Near Eastern cultures and laws, for helpful comparison and contrast. The result is a richly rewarding textbook, surveying the field of biblical scholarship comprehensively but with a light touch, drawing together many threads in wider biblical theology, and reflecting on the relevance of the Ten Commandments in contemporary church and society.”

The Emotions of God

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I finished this book with tears in my eyes, since David Lamb's closing words echo the love of my own heart for the Scriptures that show us the love of God's heart—and all the other emotions there. Indeed, if knowing God better is the goal of attentive Bible study, then this book achieved that goal for this reader. And if a sense of humor counts as an emotion, then Lamb's cheerful sprinkling of his own surely reflects something of God's own playfulness, while helping us to take seriously, for the good of our souls, the range and depth of divine emotion so richly expressed in God's Word.”
