A Catholic Introduction to the Bible
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“While written for Roman Catholics, this volume offers Protestants clear introductions to texts they rarely read and to the hermeneutic that underlies Roman Catholic theology.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“Kuruvilla offers a systematic and readable vision for the preparation of sermons and especially the preparation of preachers as they wrestle with the biblical text. Rightly arguing that the key to authoritative preaching is grasping the originally intended theological meanings of biblical texts, the author challenges us to take the Scriptures seriously and to read the Bible forward rather than backward.”

“Rarely do we encounter scholars who are able to distill the essence of complex notions and recast them in forms that are both accessible and compelling for lay readers. Carmen Imes's skills in this regard are extraordinary. In the academy, people who have read her published technical monograph on bearing God's name have been quick to celebrate the stellar quality of her work. In this volume Carmen introduces lay readers and serious students of Scripture to her major findings through writing in engaging and persuasive prose—with plenty of ideas for application. For readers who long to recover the life-giving message of grace in the Torah, this book will be a great place to start.”
Corporal Punishment in the Bible
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Webb wrestles gallantly with two difficult issues: (a) How should Christians read biblical texts that seem to advocate violent responses to situations calling for discipline? and (b) How should Christian parents handle difficult disciplinary situations involving their children? The author handles the biblical evidence carefully and exhibits great grace toward those who read and apply the evidence differently. Applying his 'redemptive-movement' hermeneutic persuasively to a specific ethical issue, he challenges readers to consider alternatives to corporal punishment in the home. This is a must-read for parents with young children, and for theologians who seek to apply the theology of texts from another time and another world to the contemporary context.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“With his handy forty-day format, Doug O’Donnell raises the register of our personal times with God. His thematic structuring invites us to deeper spiritual experiences by framing meditations on the Scriptures with opening citations of prayers by many who walked with the Lord in the past and closing classical hymns of devotion and praise for the Lord’s saving grace. The theological depth of these prayers and hymns, as well as O’Donnell’s reflections on Scripture, exposes the pervasively shallow and trivial nature of contemporary expressions of evangelical piety. But in so doing, it increases my own passion to act righteously, to demonstrate loving kindness, and to walk humbly with my God (Mic. 6:8).”

“This work brings to life the first book of the Hebrew Bible. Provan’s reviews of the treatment of the book’s motifs in the history of interpretation, including the arts, are especially helpful.”

Exegetical Gems from Biblical Hebrew
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This handy volume polishes and exposes the brilliance of the nuggets to be mined in the soil of Biblical Hebrew morphology and grammar. With thirty selected topics and carefully chosen examples, Hardy demonstrates the value of paying close attention to the details of language to discover the precious truths of Scripture. The collection itself is a major gemstone. I regret that I did not possess this treasure five decades ago, when I was learning Hebrew, and that it was not previously available to all my Hebrew students.”

“Hamilton offers a clear and concise commentary on the book of Exodus. Perhaps even more important than his interaction with the latest scholarship, he answers the questions that people actually ask when they read the text. While his treatment of alternative viewpoints is always fair, he offers his own mature reflection on each passage with clarity and wit. This is a very fine commentary.”

Give Me Understanding That I May Live
Christian Living
“This may just be the finest treatment of biblical-theological perspectives on the nature, significance, and purpose of suffering that I have ever read. The exegetical roots of Talbot’s work run deep, his theological reflections are profound, his grasp of wide-ranging secondary literature is extraordinary, and his pastoral passion is transparent. We pray that this book will challenge, comfort, and inspire many whose experiences have landed them in the swamp of confusion and despair, and that it will be a helpful resource for those whom God calls to walk—or swim—with those in this state.”
Theology
“The provocative title, God Never Meant for Us to Die, invites readers to a creative and engaging biblical theological study of theodicy. We should all welcome an investigation into this subject by an Old Testament scholar. Based upon a close reading of Gen 1–3 and related texts, Dr. Gilbert offers a solution to the problem of evil and suffering in the world that is respectful of the history of interpretation of the subject, but in the end is rooted in Scripture. With a firm grasp of the secondary literature as well, and a warm pastoral passion, he addresses the weaknesses of both Augustinian and process theological answers to the problem and presents a strong case for something in between. Pierre’s work contains plenty of grist for discussion. However, readers will be especially grateful that he has given them a healthy perspective for dealing with theodical issues in their own lives and hope for the future, rooted in the incarnation and sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ. This is one of the finest works on the subject I have read.”
