A Theology of Authority

Theology

“Debates about who has the right to wield authority in the church at times seem intractable, in no small part because we fail to attend to the different ways authority can be held and exercised. What exactly does this nebulous word authority mean, anyway? How might we understand it theologically? How does it bear on understandings of our texts, interpretations, and Christian ministries? Christa McKirland’s A Theology of Authority is an inspiring treatise on the topic that helps put the insights of analytic theology to work in constructing a theological account of authority. McKirland repeatedly drives us back to Holy Scripture and situates the authority of post-Pentecost believers with respect to the holy and humble authority of the God who reveals himself in Jesus and through his word. Her characteristically brilliant work challenges us to position the community of faith around Christ’s authority, wherein every member ought to strive to become an authoritative witness to the gospel through the power of the Spirit.”

Christian Life

Theology

“of Christian worship. A work of a theologian par excellence operating at the height of his powers, you will find yourself comforted, convicted, and encouraged to pursue a life of communion with God rooted in our union with Christ. I cannot recommend it highly enough.”

Lord Jesus Christ

Theology

“Jesus Christ is an outstanding and illuminating examination of Christology in light of Holy Scripture’s dramatic arc from God’s life in himself to creation’s eschatological communion with God. Rooted in a series of characteristically brilliant theological expositions of the names of Christ, this is a book you will find yourself reading and rereading to great benefit. It is a book that will drive you to the text of Holy Writ to hear anew its affirmation of the risen Lord. One would expect nothing less from a theologian of his caliber.”

The Pursuit of Safety

Theology

“What difference does the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Christians' conformation to this pattern of life play in our pursuit of safety? We often order our lives around the desire to maintain a sense of security, loading it with moral weight. In this book, Jeremy Lundgren deftly situates concepts of safety, risk, and harm within the redemptive narrative and the call to pursue a life ordered to the cross. Paying careful attention to the text of Holy Writ and offering numerous helpful conceptual distinctions along the way, this book is a theological masterclass well worth reading.”
