“Jesus Does Stand-Up,” and Other Satires

Arts & Literature

“While for many, truth may be found in wine, Gordon Jackson demonstrates again how concisely and revealingly truth is revealed in wit. His satirical pen discloses, in a great variety of ways, how very much the Christian church needs forgiveness and lives by grace. It's a delightful read . . . with a wholesome bite.”

A Light to the Nations

Theology

“The contemporary discussion of the ‘missional church’ has rapidly expanded and generated a confusing range of published treatments. Here is a book, however, that stands out from the crowd and merits careful attention. Michael Goheen’s A Light to the Nations is a much-needed and well-crafted basic text for the biblical study of the missional church. Based on careful reading and interpretation of an impressive range of biblical scholars, Goheen’s book engages the scholarly voices that merit serious interaction, lays out the major themes of a biblical theology of the missional church, and offers an integrative approach that will stimulate further investigation. Certainly it will become a staple of college and seminary syllabi dealing with the church and its mission. Pastors, congregations, and mission agencies will find in this book biblical orientation for faithful mission in a time of rapid and challenging change.”

A Pastoral Rule for Today

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Rather than lament the well-documented and much-discussed crisis of spirituality in western Christendom, especially among pastoral leaders, Burgess, Andrews, and Small provide a rich resource to bring about radical change. Their proposal is revolutionizing. They introduce six ecumenically diverse mentors of the holy life and build workable bridges to their spiritual legacies. We are led into the adventure of reclaiming these great traditions of spiritual discipline as resources and models for our own spiritual rule. The book is an invitation to pastoral leaders to engage, celebrate, and imitate these and other great exponents of spiritual discipline. The venture could bring about unexpected change, perhaps even the conversion of communities. It's a risk worth taking.”

Beyond Snakes and Shamrocks

Evangelism & Missions

Foreword

“Here is an invitation to encounter the spiritual journey of St. Patrick as a resource for our present-day challenges. Lockhart helps us to experience this ancient father of the church as a very modern companion. Patrick’s mission is an illuminating model for faithful witness in daunting contexts, both then and now.”

Canoeing the Mountains

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Since the missional church discussion began to develop real momentum, the constant question has been how does this theological vision of the church after Christendom translate into the practice of real congregations struggling with enormous challenges? A great deal of excellent work has been done, and there are excellent resources for the community and leadership seriously committed to missional change. But Bolsinger's book is a major step forward. It is based on solid missional theology, rooted in concrete congregational experience, shaped by provocative research of many diverse voices and communicated energetically and creatively. Most importantly, it is shaped by theologically informed hope, not just optimism, and takes the risks that must be taken for the sake of faithful witness today. I strongly commend this book!”

Christ Crucified in a Suffering World

Theology

“Nathan Hieb provides us a provocative exposition of Barth's theology of the atonement as a resource to integrate the gospel of grace and its concrete witness to justice. It is a significant contribution to Barth scholarship, demonstrating how his theological project overcomes the false dichotomies that continue to plague Christian thought. Dr. Hieb’s work supports and stimulates the continuing engagement with Barth as a theologian whose work equips the post-Christendom church for its witness in a suffering world.”

Church in Life

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Michael Moynagh’s new magnum opus, Church in Life, reworks ecclesiology, using the remarkable insights derived from the ‘fresh expressions’ movement. Drawing on remarkably diverse sources, its comprehensive research enables Moynagh to define and explicate the language of both doctrine and practice of the church. His analysis is rooted in actual practice, and documents the theological significance of emergent expressions of the missional church. What otherwise might remain a cliche (i.e. ‘innovation’) becomes here a fruitful, even ‘fresh’ field of inquiry. The outcome of the project is a range of trajectories which invite further work.”

Church Planting in the Secular West

Evangelism & Missions

“Amid the vast and growing literature addressing the end of Western Christendom and its implications for the Christian movement, Stefan Paas's critical analysis sets the standard for the debate. This is a major contribution to missional theology and practice—on both sides of the North Atlantic!”

Creating a Missional Culture

Church Leadership & Ministry

“JR Woodward's remarkable book defies categorization. To 'create a missional culture' requires disciplined biblical and theological formation, discerning engagement with contemporary cultures, appreciative interaction with diverse resources, and the courage to experiment and to innovate. Woodward does all that and more in this book. The growing exploration of the theology and practice of the missional church is enriched by this volume. Its authority rests in the author's tested and validated experience as an equipper 'of the missional church for the sake of the world.'”

Cultivating Sent Communities

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This collection of first-rate essays greatly enriches the ever-expanding and diversifying discussion of missional theology. With their distinctive perspectives, the contributors offer much-needed guidance on the theologically informed practice of missional spirituality. Only when a congregation's spiritual practices are focused on missional faithfulness can it be equipped for its calling to be Christ's witness in our postmodern world. This book is a major resource for developing that focus.”

Flawed Church, Faithful God

Theology

“In this magisterial volume Joseph Small draws together decades of thought, study, teaching, preaching, writing, and consulting on the theology and practice of the church. Powerfully relevant for today’s challenges, Flawed Church, Faithful God offers an ecclesiology that is wise, concrete, and hopeful.”

Lessons from Laodicea

Church Leadership & Ministry

Foreword

“Ross Lockhart finds in the letter to Laodicea a serious missional crisis in this first-century community, which merits close attention on the part of contemporary communities emerging from Christendom, especially in North America.”

Liberating Scripture

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“As one of those deeply involved with the first stages of the missional hermeneutics conversation, I am profoundly encouraged by this publication. It’s what our research team hoped would happen as the response to ‘the missional church discussion’ expanded and deepened.”

Movements of Grace

Theology

“The joyous gospel of God's love comes alive in this passionately argued and carefully resourced exposition. It has powerful implications for evangelistic practice and provides much needed theological tools for the critical engagement with many questionable forms of evangelism today. It belongs on the bibliography of any college or seminary class dealing with evangelism and on the 'must read' list of any church or para-church concerned about the faithfulness, the integrity, and the promise of Christian witness to the gospel.”

Participating in God's Mission

Evangelism & Missions

“The missional exploration of the implications of the end of Western Christendom has been helpfully guided by the growing consensus about the centrality of the theology of the mission of God. This book refines that consensus with its ‘missiological interpretation of the contemporary cultural environment.’ The parsing of the Christendom legacy provided here is a rich resource for further exploration of what it means, biblically and theologically, to be God’s witnessing people in the North Atlantic mission fields. This is a welcome and challenging expansion and deepening of the missional discourse.”

The Centered Life

Christian Living

“With this exposition of 'the centered life,' Jack Fortin contributes a theologically solid guide for the congregation that takes the ministry of the laity seriously. He translates the biblical doctrine of vocation into the language and experience of the lay person without diluting the gospel of grace or reducing the Christian life to simplistic 'how-to's.' The book is written in a lively, readable way, enriched by truly relevant illustrations and the judicious use of an impressive range of resources.”

The Core of the Christian Faith

Christian Living

“A much-needed and well-crafted basic text for the biblical study of the missional church.”

The Distinctive Identity of the Church

Theology

“Nikolajsen's study is a substantial contribution to missional ecclesiology. He demonstrates convincingly how Newbigin and Yoder are crucial and prophetic guides of the church after Christendom. Nikolajsen's work is a remarkable combination of dispassionate research generating passionate theology. His scholarship not only defines the identity of the church but shows what 'missional' properly means.”
