An Introduction to the Old Testament

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“If you are looking for a scholar to tell you exactly what to think about the Bible, keep looking. But if you like to be challenged to think, question, probe, investigate, you'll love Goldingay's An Introduction to the Old Testament. The language is fresh, the questions insightful, the background informative and the approach engaging.”

Creativity, Theology, and Posttraumatic Growth

Counseling, Grief & Mental Health

“Risser’s examination of the vital role that creativity plays in posttraumatic growth not only provides a clear overview of the field of research on this topic but also a blueprint for how individuals, churches, and counselors can make play a greater aspect of the healing process.”

Enjoying the Old Testament

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“Many readers of Scripture find the Old Testament boring, legalistic, or ethically troubling. If any of these sentiments are true for you, Seibert's guide will not only enable you to understand the 'Neglected Testament' better, but also to enjoy it—and even love it. The book is filled with wise advice for readers of the Bible as well as helpful, practical suggestions for how to study, learn, and appreciate it. I've been teaching the Old Testament for decades, and my love for it was deepened by his words.”

Ezra-Nehemiah

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“If you want to understand Ezra-Nehemiah, start with Schnittjer's valuable new commentary. He offers rich insights into what might appear to be boring lists, provides crucial background about the Persian Empire, and makes sense of hair-pulling incidents and other troubling texts. His clear, convincing presentation of this material is illuminated by many helpful tables, figures, and maps. While the biblical book of Ezra-Nehemiah ends badly, Schnittjer guides readers to see that the unifying theme of the book is the faithfulness of Yahweh.”

How to Read the Psalms

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Longman has a unique gift to make complex biblical ideas clear and understandable. In this introduction to the Psalms, he writes with a scholar's experience and wisdom, and with a pastor's ability to connect Scripture to everyday life and practice. I will continue to use Longman's book not only as a textbook in my courses but also as a resource to help me understand and appreciate the Psalms.”

Joshua

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“John Goldingay writes a lot of books, but I never tire of reading them. In this masterful commentary on the book of Joshua, Goldingay offers readers a fresh translation, fascinating textual insights, rich literary wisdom, and surprisingly relevant connections to current popular culture. While Joshua’s ethically troubling narrative has prompted many attempts to make sense of it, Goldingay manages to engage the problems without being consumed by them. And all along the way, he consistently challenges readers to reflect on how God might be speaking through this problematic book to us today.”

Longing for Joy

Christian Living

“Our God delights in joy, and Alastair Sterne invites us to cultivate the joy of God in our lives. As he leads you on a quest for joy, he shares engaging stories that are humble and humorous, profound and powerful. If you say 'Yes' to his invitation, you will be blessed.”

Old Testament Ethics: A Guided Tour

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Like a great tour guide, Goldingay skillfully leads his readers through the ethically problematic pages of the Old Testament, covering the usual topics (compassion, justice, nations) as well as the less typical yet perhaps more timely topics (contentment, animals, migrants). This book is infused not only with massive quantities of Goldingay's fresh translation of Scripture but also with his brilliant (and sometimes quirky) textual and theological insights. Readers are sure to find the book illuminating, challenging, and inspiring.”

Sinai and the Saints

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Many readers of the Old Testament struggle to understand all of those random, bizarre, strict, and oppressive laws. What's a Christian to do? Start by reading Todd's Sinai and the Saints. Todd offers his readers engaging stories, provocative insights, and a compelling interpretation that offers a way forward—one that makes sense of the law and helps people understand it in light of Jesus and the rest of Scripture.”

The Destruction of the Canaanites

Apologetics

“If you are overwhelmed not only by the ethically problematic nature of the Canaanite conquest but also by the number (and size!) of books written on the topic, start here with Trimm’s short and accessible Destruction of the Canaanites. Trimm helpfully provides background on the ancient context, on the concept of genocide, and on the identity of Canaanites, before carefully working through possible interpretational solutions to the problem. I’m confident that readers will greatly appreciate, as I did, Trimm’s wisdom and perspective on this difficult subject.”

The First Testament

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“While new translations of the Bible are constantly appearing, with the vast majority only offering slight variations, Goldingay's translation offers a fresh alternative, providing a rare glimpse into the language, culture, and worldview of ancient Israel. His rendering of a Hebrew word or phrase often left me saying, 'Wow, that's perfect!' The section headings are creative and clever, fantastic and funny. The introductions to each book not only help readers see the forest (not just the trees), but also provide profound theological reflections on the nature of God. Everyone will love this.”

The Good Shepherd

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Kenneth Bailey refreshes the souls of readers with deep textual insights and helpful contextual background to safely shepherd readers through the thousand-year story of Psalm 23. He makes several stops along the way in the Prophets, before settling into the Gospels where he deftly introduces us to a fresh understanding of the Good Shepherd. Anyone who loves the 23rd Psalm will love this book.”

The King-Priest in Samuel

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“In this well-researched and clearly written study, Nicholas Majors examines relevant texts related to the theme of the king-priest not only in 1–2 Samuel, but also in the Pentateuch. Majors presents a compelling argument that these texts reveal how the messianic figure was not meant to be merely a ruler, but that from the beginning, he was meant to serve in a priestly capacity as well. Anyone interested in the Israelite monarchy, or the biblical portrayal of Messiah, will find this a fascinating read.”
