A Big Gospel in Small Places

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This is one of the more important books written about the gospel and missions in recent decades. Stephen Witmer takes the gospel seriously: he is more interested in the good news than in church-planting strategies. He takes people seriously: he is more concerned for people than for programs. He understands success in terms of faithfulness to God's calling rather than in terms of fame, in terms of the transformation of people's lives rather than in terms of the numerical size of a congregation. Here writes an academic who wears his scholarship lightly, a pastor who challenges his audience to think deeply, a follower of Jesus who follows Jesus to all the places where people live. Witmer explains that strategic thinking about ministry must acknowledge one of the great truths about God who lavishes his grace on city people, on small-town people, and on village people alike. This book is a pleasure to read, indeed a must-read for professors, students, and pastors who think about gospel ministry in the twenty-first century.”

A Gospel Pageant

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Chapple's introduction to the Book of Revelation brings clarity where there has been much confusion, dedication to the text rather than theories, and focus on essentials where others get lost in the forest of motifs and symbols. A Gospel Pageant deserves to be used in introductory courses, Bible study groups and in private readings of Scripture. It is a most welcome addition.”

A Theology of Luke and Acts

Theology

“This comprehensive and competent—indeed commanding—treatment of the theology of Luke’s two-volume work provides readers with a concise yet detailed survey of essentially all areas of theology: the work and character of God, the work and person of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, salvation, Israel, Jews and Gentiles, the church, ethics, opposition and persecution, social questions, the law, the Old Testament Scriptures, and eschatology. Darrell Bock’s focus on the text rather than on scholarly debates ensures that readers learn what Luke wanted his readers to comprehend: the fulfillment of God’s promises in and through Jesus, Israel’s Messiah and the Savior of the world.”

A Theology of Paul and His Letters

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Doug Moo is one of the few scholars who can be trusted to write a theology of Paul’s letters that is exegetically rigorous, philologically informed, theologically and biblically consistent, and at the same time written in a style that scholars, pastors, as well as believers interested in advanced explanations of Scripture will read with pleasure. Surveying the life of Paul as missionary theologian, Moo provides analyses of each of Paul’s thirteen letters before explaining Paul’s convictions regarding Jesus Christ, Jesus’s substitutionary death, human beings and sin, the blessings of what Moo calls the “new realm,” God’s election and the faith response, Jesus’s return and judgment, the nature and life of the church, and the ethical behavior of believers in Jesus. On the last page of this magnum opus, Moo records his desire that readers would come away with the “renewed mind” that Paul wishes for the believers in the city of Rome. One does not need to be a prophet to be convinced that anyone who reads A Theology of Paul and His Letters attentively will gain a consolidated understanding of the gospel and a new perspective for Christian living that is faithful to Scripture.”

Biblical Missions

Evangelism & Missions

“This massive volume introduces readers into the foundations and the fundamentals of the missionary work of the church, written by a wide range of authors who are concerned with scriptural integrity and commitment to the gospel and its proclamation. The book is highly recommended.”

Colossians, Volume 44A

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Clint Arnold’s commitment to historical research, theological exposition, and pastoral explanation gives pastors and scholars alike a commentary on Paul’s letter to the believers in the congregation at Colossae that will serve as a North Star of Pauline Pauline scholarship in general and research into Colossians in particular for a long time to come.”

Dictionary of the New Testament Use of the Old Testament

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“The Dictionary of the New Testament Use of the Old Testament can best be described as a companion volume to the immensely successful Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, riding the big wave of studies on the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament. The articles of the dictionary, which move from Abraham to Zephaniah and condense relevant English-language scholarship, survey all the biblical books and discuss biblical-theological topics (e.g., church, covenant, creation, ethics, gospel, Holy Spirit, justification, promise, shame, sin, wrath), Jewish exegetical traditions (e.g., Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, Septuagint), and inner-biblical exegesis (e.g., allegory, method, orality, rhetoric, typology, systematic theology, biblical theology). The dictionary is an indispensable resource for all who interpret, teach, and preach both Old Testament and New Testament texts. The editors and Baker Academic are to be congratulated on producing this magnificent volume.”

Eis Peirasmón

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Elmetti has written an important book which forces readers to grapple with the meaning of the biblical text rather than focus on what scholars have proposed. He clarifies the meaning and role of temptation in the Lord’s Prayer in the context of seminal Old and New Testament texts. Clearly written, this book is a thought-provoking pleasure to read!”

Encountering John

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Students who look for a comprehensive introduction into the Fourth Gospel need to look no further: Köstenberger has written the best college-level introduction available. The book is packed with information yet easy to read. It competently interacts with the most recent scholarship yet is not pedantic in its presentation of secondary sources. It regularly discusses differing views on numerous topics yet never loses its focus. I highly recommend the book.”

Ephesians

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Frank Thielman’s commentary on Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians is exemplary for pastors who seek solid information about the meaning of this letter to the Christians in western Asia Minor, for missionaries who seek guidance for the contextualization of the truth of the gospel in other cultures, for teachers in churches and professors at seminaries who want to survey older and recent interpretations of the Greek text, and for all who seek a deeper understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The careful historical exegesis, judicious exegetical decisions, and consistent concern to highlight the theology of the text make this an indispensable commentary.”

Fundamentals of New Testament Textual Criticism

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Porter and Pitts have admirably achieved what they set out to do — provide a succinct introduction to the manuscript tradition of the Greek New Testament for first- and second-year students of Koine Greek. . . . This book is ideal both for students in classrooms and for general readers who seek reliable information about the origins and the text of the New Testament.”

Handbook on Acts and Paul's Letters

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This new textbook is highly informative, consistently comprehensive, and eminently accessible. With his customary acumen as a scholar and his pastoral sensitivity as a teacher, Schreiner introduces his readers to the complex realities of the first-century world, the missionary work of the earliest missionaries, and the theological emphases of Luke and Paul, two of the most prolific theologians of the early church, without losing sight of the foundational convictions that the early followers of Jesus lived and died for.”

Handbook on Hebrews through Revelation

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Andreas Köstenberger's Handbook is immensely informative and eminently readable, helping students, pastors, and more generally readers of the New Testament acquire an in-depth understanding of an often neglected but highly important part of the Scriptures. It can be used as an introduction, a brief commentary, or a guide in one's personal reading of the Bible. I highly recommend this book.”

Paul, Apostle of Grace

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“What Frank Thielman offers in this book is nothing less than the now-definitive biography of the apostle Paul, written with customary clarity, caution, and commitment to historical investigation and theological elucidation. Students, pastors, and scholars will equally benefit from this immensely valuable study.”

Paul's Thorn in the Flesh

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Dr. Berding has written an absorbing book about Paul's thorn in the flesh that not only assists readers in understanding a contested New Testament passage but also prompts us to have a fuller, more human understanding of the great apostle whose life experiences may have been strikingly similar to those of contemporary Christians who suffer from chronic illnesses.”

Peoples and Places

Evangelism & Missions

“Matthew Hirt has diligently worked through biblical-exegetical, sociological, and missiological studies to clarify whether recent developments which emphasize people groups while de-emphasizing geography are justified. . . . This excellent study makes readers think, learn, reassess, adjust, and devise avenues on which to fulfill the Great Commission with greater precision, biblical fidelity, and contextual objectivity.”
