Arts & Literature
“Poet Christopher Carter marries artistry and theology to reveal and behold the face of the redeemer. We should all bask in this holy intimacy and gratefully see ourselves aright.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Christopher Watkin’s expert, timely compendium of Christian Scripture’s subversive engagement of dominating themes of our modern age brings welcome healing to our world. Now may we live it!”
Philosophy
“Dru Johnson attends carefully to Scripture to elucidate the dimensions of human knowing it exemplifies throughout. He compares biblical knowing favorably with scientific epistemology in a Polanyian vein, and he contrasts it with the myopic preoccupation with propositions in Anglo-American analytic philosophy. Johnson taps his multi-disciplinary expertise to bring Christian scholars a valuable study that itself calls us to listening and participation in order to see a broader reality.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“There is an entire world to draw into our Christian worship and discipleship—quite literally—a world we may have been overlooking. The Revd Robin Parry, overseer of wild worship in the sanctuary garden by the towering Worcester Cathedral, offers this carefully written, thoughtful guide to enacting Christian eco-spirituality and understanding why it matters. I really like this book! Open your eyes and hands to the divine Word and Wisdom expressed in the creation of God.”
Philosophy
“Critical Conversations displays two remarkably distinctive things about . . . Michael Polanyi's epistemology. The rich, open-ended truthfulness of his proposals inspires innovative and penetrating cross-disciplinary conversations of all kinds; and conversants thus engaged experience freeing creativity and conviviality. Theological engagement is especially fruitful since Polanyi himself challenges a deadening Enlightenment legacy with an approach that is knowledge- and humanity- and hope-restoring because it is theologically attuned. These essayists offer a rich conversation that others may join profitably--convivially.”
World Religions
“It’s precisely because God loves sex that the Enemy hates it—turns it into a Mirkwood of entangled abuses and heartbreaks and compulsions, a dark place better skirted than braved. Enter Dan and Tremper, old comrades tenderly fearless enough to open sexuality to a little light and air, to name our shames in a way that relieves us of them and woos us to godly desire and play. Their machetes—the Bible at its most scandalously sexual, and professional psychology (fictionalized in Malcolm!) at its most scandalously Christian. There is probably no one who cannot find herself or himself in this book and therein find new hope.”
Evangelism & Missions
“A fine study of the remarkable vision of twentieth-century churchman Lesslie Newbigin, with careful attention to its critical intersection with the era-healing philosophy of scientific discoverer and public intellectual, Michael Polanyi. Essential reading for the rehabilitation of the Christian church in our time.”
Love and the Postmodern Predicament
Philosophy
“Philosopher D. C. Schindler defies the dragon of modernity, whose dominant thought patterns induce a life- and culture-threatening loss of reality and self. He offers life-giving proposals regarding love, being, and the transcendentals to restore us profoundly to the world and to ourselves as humans. Buy the book—you may divest yourself of others. Digest it, and revel in your already-involvement with a responsive reality—an involvement of intimate encounter and communion; a reality that is love, fraught with beauty, goodness, and truth.”
Discipleship & Christian Education
“Adolescent Christians entering adulthood often have plenty of zeal for the faith, but stand in need of theological facility and in even greater need of philosophical awareness. This little book opens both doors and welcomes the newcomer in to what proves to be—and this, too, can be surprising—a single room of treasures. I especially love how exploring the room brings to light, not only the treasures, but traces of the copious inquiries of an experience Christian scholar and caring teacher of philosophy. It inspires and summons to a life of loving wisdom (philosophy) and loving God.”
Philosophy
“This scholarly work reflects the seasoning of a life formed in and devoted to the very things it commends. Arguing that modern epistemology, with its narrow focus on justification, is ill-equipped to mature people in responsible believing, Frazier taps the ancient greats to propose a wider account: Humans' natural inclination to truth, hampered by our prideful self-deception, may be wooed by the world's intimations of beauty, and restored through intellectual love and humility, and a spirituality of inquiry.”
Philosophy
“The many and varied streams of Dru Johnson's own expertise and experience have blended into a single vision in this delightfully seasoned and profound work. Scripture's Knowing is admirably pitched and packaged for easy access and dissemination. Buy it! Read it! Steep in it. Share it with your small group or class or congregation. This transformative understanding of knowing holds the prospect of blessing you, your church, and even culture.”
Discipleship & Christian Education
“The ever-fertile, provocative ‘Framean Triad’ is standing the test of time. Wonderful to see theologian John Frame’s motif tapped yet again, in this book for normative guidance in designing Christian spiritual formation, especially for thoughtful, devoted youth ministers. An important endeavor all round.”
