Character Formation in Online Education
Discipleship & Christian Education
“The timing was perfect. I, the online education newbie, was eager to learn what to do. Joanne Jung was the master with a fresh new manual written just for people like me. I ate it up. What a fascinating collage of insights! Puritan history, positive psychology, spiritual mystery, and contemporary pedagogy, all woven together into a single guide to online education for those of us who are concerned not only with the accumulation of information but also in the development of Christian character. I put Joanne’s suggestions into practice with passion: instructor presence and collaborative participation, lecture videos, teaming with a course designer, and more. Much to my surprise, both my students and I are really enjoying the online educational experience. And what is more, we are growing in our faith through the experience.”
Children & Youth
“I loved this book! If only it had been around thirty years ago, when our family was exploring devotions! This book is an imaginative game, a devotional guide, and a theology text all rolled into one. It will nurture your own spiritual formation as much as your child's. The guided prayers that form the core of this book are well constructed, creative, and simply delightful. Boyd is not afraid to introduce difficult questions, but he helps me as a parent talk about them with my children. Imaginative Prayer develops essential skills of Christian spiritual formation—skills that are often neglected in the training of our children. I would recommend this book to parents, Christian education workers, and theology professors. We all need to imagine the gospel!”
Journaling as a Spiritual Practice
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“This is a book which should not be (merely) read. It should be done. Her book is a vast smorgasbord of particular experiences in the practice of journal-keeping, each one inviting the readers to 'taste and see' the presence of God in their lives. This book opens up the rich potential in journaling, warns us of the patterns of thinking that threaten to derail this practice and provides the tools to make it a valuable means of pursuing relationship with God.”
Spiritual Formation as if the Church Mattered
Christian Living
“Spiritual Formation as if the Church Mattered is the mature fruit of a devout scholar. Here Wilhoit weaves theory, passion, and practice together into a rich re-presentation of the gospel for the local church. He takes the discussion about spiritual formation an important step forward, shifting the emphasis from private pursuit to corporate culture. Sensitive to the seldom-noticed dangers along the path of growth toward Christlikeness, this book is loaded with wisdom for those who desire to facilitate communities of formation.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“The Fire of the Word is an inspiring call to read Scripture as a means of encountering God personally. One by one Chris removes obstacles in our view of God, of Scripture and of oursevels that stand in the way of a transforming relationship with our Bible. The book provides valuable assistance in reading our Bible wholeheartedly: with attention, imagination, reason, emotion and intention. I followed with delight his stories of childhood foolishness, art history, alcoholic friendships and more as this book empowered me to listen to the voice of God through Scripture.”
