1 Samuel as Christian Scripture

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“The account of David's rise to kingship has long been a theme of contemporary biblical scholarship, but the results of recent work have been rather thin on the theological side. This work is a major course correction on that front. Chapman helps the reader ponder anew the theological and literary issues that lay at the heart of Israel's transition to kingship in general and the reign and legacy of David in particular.”

A Jewish Paul

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Ever since E. P. Sanders’s pioneering work, the role of Judaism has been an important dimension of work on Paul’s letters. In this very readable volume, Thiessen provides the reader with a portrait of Paul that takes his Jewishness with the seriousness it deserves. The debate on many issues he engages will not be brought to closure, but he charts directions that all scholars will need to consider going forward.”

Al investigar el misterio de la Iglesia

Theology

“Las implicaciones de Nostra Aetate permanecieron latentes durante aproximadamente una década, hasta el pontificado de Juan Pablo II. Desde entonces, los pensadores católicos han comenzado a indagar más profundamente cómo se relaciona el misterio de Israel con el de la Iglesia. Mark Kinzer ha reflexionado mucho sobre estas cuestiones y el lector se beneficiará de lo que él ha aprendido sobre este tema tan importante.”

An Introduction to the Bible

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This fine introductory volume does precisely what it sets out to do: it presents readers with an outline of what to look for as they make their way through the biblical text. The commentary does not overpower the reader with scholarly theories; instead it allows the reader to confront the text as it stands.”

Atonement

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“For a variety of reasons, understanding the atonement will be a project that will never finish. Every generation of scholars must put its shoulder to the oar. In this volume the reader will encounter the intellectual guidance of some of the foremost experts in the field.”

Biblical Theology

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This outstanding book will introduce the reader into the questions that currently animate the field of Biblical Theology. One cannot say enough good things about the comprehensive character of the essays as whole, the consistent brilliance of their execution and even energy which bubbles underneath the various contributions. Highly recommended!”

Covenant and the People of God

Theology

“This beautiful volume includes essays by some of the most accomplished scholars working on the intersection between Judaism and Christianity. The notion that an observant Jew might confess Jesus as the Messiah will remain a complicated and controversial topic. There is no simple solution to this challenge, but this volume addresses a number of the sensitive dimensions of this issue in a non-polemical and post-supersessionist fashion.”

Engaging Leviticus

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“"The book of Leviticus has been something of a sealed book for sometime in the modern imagination. But with the recent efforts of Mary Douglas in the field of anthropology and Jacob Milgrom in biblical studies there has been something of a renaissance in interest. Elliot has pushed the envelope even further by bringing to our attention the rich resources of the history of interpretation. His reading is almost impossibly vast, only matched by his erudition and eye for that which is truly important. No reader will look at Leviticus the same way having spent some time with this marvelous book.”

Engaging the Doctrine of Israel

Theology

“In this deeply learned and religiously sensitive volume, the reader will enter a discussion like no other about the place of Israel within the domain of Christian theology. The place of Judaism within the theological work of the church will look different after working through these illuminating pages.”

Five Models of Scripture

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is an ecumenically sensitive presentation of five different models for reading the Bible. Reasoner’s familiarity with a wide range of approaches within the Christian tradition is matched by his deeply respectful approach to positions other than his own. He had my full attention from the first to the last page. This is a work that engages the Christian Bible at the level at which it was written: for instruction regarding how to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.”

God Draws Near

Theology

“In this well-written and well-argued book, Cornell returns to a classic question of medieval theology: Is there a good to the Incarnation greater than that of repairing the damage of original sin? In the Song of Songs and the story of the building of the Tabernacle Cornell finds his answer: the desire of God to draw the human person near to himself. This desire is logically and temporally prior to the task of repairing the damage done by the Fall.”

Isaiah

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This outstanding volume opens a new window on the text of one of Israel's most beloved prophets, Isaiah. I found myself continually entranced by the innumerable insights that the early Christian theological imagination was able to cull from its biblical source. The approach taken by these writers is often as hard-hitting as it is edifying. These classic thinkers took the biblical text seriously and wrestled with problems that continue to befuddle modern readers. This masterful collection of patristic interpretations gives the reader a powerful new lens with which to examine the sacred page. One of the real attractions of the volume is that the selections provided are long enough that one can take a favorite interpreter and follow him through the course of the whole book.”

Job

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is a beautiful commentary on the literary character and theological depth of the book of Job. It is by far the best modern treatment that I have read. Legaspi manages to read the book in an engaging yet sophisticated manner. I particularly like the fact that he retains a healthy respect for the ‘otherness’ of its ancient origins while at the same time he enables the reader to see its relevance for contemporary religious life. This is a book I will return to often in my pursuit of biblical wisdom.”

Searching Her Own Mystery

Theology

“The implications of Nostra Aetate lay dormant for a decade or so until the Pontificate of John Paul II. Since then, Catholic thinkers have begun to probe more deeply how the mystery of Israel is related to that of the Church. Mark Kinzer has thought long and hard about these issues and the reader will be the beneficiary of his learning on this important issue.”

The Achievement of David Novak

World Religions

“The subject of interreligious dialogue is one of the most important and compelling topics of our day. Yet frequently the tenor of such discussions can be far too superficial. David Novak’s work on this subject has been anything but that and the writers assembled in this volume maintain that very high standard. This book will be necessary reading for anyone interested in Jewish-Christian dialogue.”

The Destruction of the Canaanites

Apologetics

“This excellent volume takes an honest, hard look at the ways in which biblical scholars have tried to explain the moral challenge posed by the stories of the conquest of Canaan in the Bible. No easy solutions are offered, but the reader will come away with a far better grasp of the nature of the problem.”

The Gospel of Mark

Theology

“This well-written book fills a very important niche in our appreciation of the Gospels. Healy combines literary sensitivity with theological vigor, resulting in a reading of Mark that puts a compelling face on the message of this Gospel.”

The Life of the World to Come

Theology

“It is a rare scholar who can combine a responsible reading of Scripture's literal sense with careful attention to how those same Scriptures have been received and molded in the Church's theological tradition. In this exemplary book, Morales avails himself of both Scripture and tradition to unpack the way in which the beatific vision will be realized through the resurrected bodies of the redeemed. Though the former has been thought by some to be limited to the realm of the spirit or intellect alone, Morales shows us the crucial role that the resurrection of Christ and the redeemed will play.”

The Lord Bless You

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This beautifully written book will shed considerable light on one of the most important texts of the Bible—the Priestly Blessing found in the book of Numbers. Chapman pauses over each phrase in order to give ear to all the tones sounded in this famous prayer.”

When I Die, Bury Me Well

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This beautifully written book brings together some of the major themes that constitute both the core of the book of Tobit and the experience of many Jews in the Second Temple period. Those would be the experience of exile and the growing significance of charitable deeds. The book of Tobit has received a good deal of interest for precisely these reasons over the past decade or so, but the treatments have been very uneven. Macatangay, however, is one of the best interpreters we have, and readers will greatly profit from his astute guidance through the various twists and turns of the work's compelling storyline.”
