History & Biography
“De Gruchy offers us an interesting and provocative look at Calvin. Although much of it is familiar, de Gruchy brings an interesting perspective to the discussion throughout, shaped in large measure by his experience on the ground in South Africa. The book is particularly effective in spelling out the social impact of Calvin’s thought, which seems to be de Gruchy’s sense of what “Christian humanism” entails.” “The book is intended for nonspecialists... That said, de Gruchy’s focus on topics that are not usually included in discussions of Calvin, particularly social justice an racial reconciliation, would make this a very effective introduction to Calvin for audiences with those interests.”
