An Evangelical Spiritual Theology

Theology

“Jamin Goggin rightly understands that the key which unlocks Donald Bloesch’s theology is to view it as a spiritual theology, centered on the Christian life. Throughout his whole corpus, Bloesch desired that Christians mature into a holy people and theology was done for that very telos. Goggin’s careful reading of Bloesch and lucid articulation of his thought is a welcome addition and should serve as a catalyst for the renewal of Bloesch’s theological vision.”

An Introduction to Christian Mysticism

World Religions

“The word ‘mysticism’ is often loaded with misunderstandings and underlying assumptions that are not clearly understood, so much so that one wonders if the word has lost its currency, specifically in the discipline of Christian theology. It may still have a home in anthropology or comparative religions, but not theology. Jason Baxter, however, competently and convincingly shows in An Introduction to Christian Mysticism that such is not the case. In fact, he shows that mysticism is not only a viable and venerable Christian concept but one that needs to be recovered in the contemporary church. With ease he introduces his readers to the ‘greatest hits’ of the early and medieval Christian mystical tradition, revealing their own systems of thought while also connecting them thematically to one another.”

Four Mountains

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Michael Niebauer opens up the text in a manner that allows it to be read spiritually and figuratively as Holy Scripture.”

From Aristotle to Christ

Philosophy

“When one studies the early church mothers and fathers, their debt to Plato is obvious. Unfortunately, few students and scholars continue reading into the high Middle Ages, where Aristotle's thought becomes dominant, especially among the scholastic theologians, giving the impression that Plato's influence is foremost in the history of Christian thought. Louis Markos shows how Aristotle's influence is not just in scholasticism but all over the Christian tradition, reminding us that we owe a great debt to Aristotle too. This accessible book should be read by everyone interested in theology.”

Give Us This Day Devotionals, Volume 8

Bible Studies & Devotionals

“Charles Erlandson’s final volume of Give Us This Day Devotionals brings his lectio on the New Testament to a close. His astute and thoughtful meditations allow the reader not only to learn from God’s word but to engage in their own lectio on Erlandson’s rich commentary. This is the fruit of years of study and meditation and having it in print for the benefit of others is a gift to the church.”

Introducing Medieval Biblical Interpretation

Theology

“Levy has taken a vast amount of information that often is available only to the specialist and made it easily and enjoyably accessible to non-experts. For those unfamiliar with medieval biblical interpretation, this volume is a readable yet rich introduction to the topic. It lays out the broad trajectory of medieval biblical interpretation and demonstrates its relevance for the Christian church today.”

Making Disciples

Discipleship & Christian Education

“Catechesis or Christian formation never ends, for no believer is ever fully formed or wholly catechized. Alex Fogleman’s Making Disciples is a persuasive presentation on the need for ongoing, robust catechesis in the Christian church. Such formation is not a luxury but a necessary and essential ingredient for any healthy congregation.”

Missionary Monks

History & Biography

“Some Christians falsely conclude that monks are of little earthly good because they are so preoccupied with prayer that they do little for the kingdom of God. This book definitively shows that this is an incorrect conclusion. In an easily readable and accessible manner Smither demonstrates that monks from all areas and eras of the Christian world have been engaged in mission, bringing the gospel to all people. It will change your view of monasticism.”

Pierced by Love

Christian Living

“Though the Protestant and evangelical churches have begun to recover elements of the Christian tradition, especially patristic sources, the rich history and theology of the Middle Ages remains to be explored in its fullness. Hans Boersma’s Pierced by Love is an excellent introduction to and exposition of early and medieval writings on sacred reading. The book's deep examination of medieval authors illuminates the Bible-centeredness of medieval theology and the text’s many diagrams further reveals the richness of medieval reading and reflection on the Bible. One does not need to be an expert in medieval theology to benefit greatly from Boersma’s analysis and his incisive treatment will change the way you read the Bible. Take up and read!”

The Fourth Degree of Prayer

Prayer & Spiritual Formation

“In The Fourth Degree of Prayer, Michael Voigts reappropriates the deep spiritual teaching of Bernard of Clairvaux’s On Loving God, translating it into a guidebook for twenty-first-century Christian pray-ers. In doing so, he shows how the wisdom of the monastics continues to speak today and demonstrates that prayer is meant to be deep, even eternal. This is not just a how-to manual but a deep theological reflection on the nature of prayer itself.”

To Be Welcomed as Christ

“To Be Welcomed as Christ is a fitting tribute to Dennis Okholm, whose wide-ranging interests are well represented in this volume. But what ties them all together is Okholm’s commitment to the Christian monastic heritage, whose influence is likewise diffused throughout the church and across the Christian tradition. Just as monasticism is a gift to the church, so is Okholm, and his influence in institutions and individuals will continue to flourish and bear much fruit.”
