A Lasting Prophetic Legacy

History & Biography

“Challenging a popular perception of King as merely an American civil rights leader, this work shows King's struggles against racism and war had a global scope by building a broad coalition of conscience among different races, religious groups, and nationalities. With its primary focus on King's relationship with the World Council of Churches, this book presents a wonderful resource for the study of King's global public ministry and his ecumenism that advocates both spiritual transformation and social justice.”

After the Election

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“After the Election is a timely and wise book that reminds us why we need both democracy and Christianity rather than choose one over against the other, for the wellbeing of the republic. I strongly recommend this book to those who care about the future of democracy and the credibility of Christianity in the United States.”

Agape Ethics

Philosophy

“Inspired by Emmanuel Levinas's moral philosophy, Greenway presents a thoughtful and plausible case for a new agape ethics (based in finding oneself 'seized by the faces of others') as a constructive alternative to the ethical relativism of postmodernity, the ethical extremism of religious radicals, and the ethical foundationalism of modernity. With its richness in spiritual sensibility, public relevance, and ecological potency, Agape Ethics is an important achievement for Christian philosophical ethics.”

Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“David Gushee investigates key historical and current moments in which Christians have served as zealous guardians of reactionary political programs and authoritarian regimes. His book draws on sound biblical and theological resources to offer a timely, eloquent, and compelling apologetic for democracy. Defending Democracy deserves the close attention of ethically minded Christians during this time of political turbulence and moral confusion!”

Disciplined by Race

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Joining the growing voices of scholars in Asian American Christian ethics, a nascent discipline within Asian American theology, Ki Joo Choi offers a fresh and highly nuanced social analysis and in-depth ethical reflection on nebulous topics of Asian American identity, race, and culture. Adding new insights and clarity in understanding Asian American experiences of racialization, this book is a wonderful resource for religious scholars and students who are interested in critical race theory.”

In the Fray

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“This wonderful collection of David Gushee's essays discusses controversial ethical issues of our time with clarity, conviction, and courage. . . . [It] shows why David Gushee deserves to be called a leading American evangelical ethicist and a public intellectual. I strongly recommend this book to scholars, pastors, seminarians, and lay leaders for its many fresh insights on and concrete guidance for Christian discipleship.”

Reformed Virtue After Barth

Theology

“This work presents a fresh, creative approach to Christian virtue ethics from a Barthian perspective. Building on a careful analysis of the Reformed theological traditions of Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, and the Westminster Confession, and also through a critical conversation with Aristotelian and Thomistic virtue ethics, Nolan develops a constructive Reformed Christian virtue ethics based on Karl Barth’s theology of revelation. An important addition to current scholarly conversations on virtue ethics from a Reformed Christian perspective!”

The Problem and Promise of Freedom

Theology

“This book rejects conservative Christianity’s culture-war stance against secular liberalism and instead advances a vibrant Pentecostal public theology of renewal and abundance. Rooted in the biblical themes of covenant, jubilee, and Pentecost (interpreted as a cosmic jubilee), this book presents a constructive theological alternative to secular liberal ideologies of freedom and the free-market economy. Written with conceptual clarity, academic rigor, and fresh insights, this work makes a significant contribution to public theology.”

Warlike Christians in an Age of Violence

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“When many conservative Christians serve as drum majors whenever the nation goes to war, Nick Megoran makes a persuasive and passionate case against war and violence with a refreshing reminder of the core message of peace in the Gospel of Jesus. By engaging with a broad spectrum of theological claims (e.g., just war theory, liberal pacifism), key biblical texts, and salient historical examples (e.g., Adolf Hitler), this book presents a consistent perspective against war, called ‘Gospel peacemaking.’ Written by a political geographer conversant with the studies of political conflicts, the book deserves careful attention and discussion among all Christians who take the Gospel of Jesus and Christian discipleship seriously.”
