A Cultural Handbook to the Bible
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Once more Pilch has given us what we have come to expect from him — thorough knowledge from Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures giving new and unexpected insights into the texts of the Bible. Short essays on a wide range of topics provide answers to the curious Bible reader, and bibliographies give students tools to pursue their own explorations into the fascinating world of the Bible. This is a book to enjoy and learn from!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This volume on the Bible takes central place in Elliott's masterful four-volume study of the Evil Eye. With full command of the biblical material as well as the history of research, Elliott's exemplary investigation shows how belief in the Evil Eye illuminates the culture and perceptions of the world shared with the Greco-Roman context. But Elliott also highlights the distinctive character of Jesus's Evil Eye sayings with focus on generosity and sharing of resources.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment! Taylor paints a totally new picture of the boy Jesus as a refugee and emigrant in a landscape of turbulence and violence that shaped his life.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Jerome H. Neyrey is incomparable as a teacher to new and advanced students of the New Testament. In a unique way, he weaves together insights from ancient rhetoric and modern anthropology to illuminate Luke’s presentation of Jesus as a public teacher. If you have not read any of Neyrey’s many books on the New Testament in light of social sciences and classical traditions, this is the one to read!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“With its combination of modern spatial theory and sources from Antiquity, the book is an invaluable introduction to how spatial thinking has informed and shaped our experiences and understanding of ourselves and the world around us from antiquity to the present.”
Imagining Jesus in His Own Culture
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“‘By combining St. Ignatius’s contemplative prayers with an historical study of Jesus in the Gospels, Neyrey reaches an extraordinary achievement. He brings us into the foreign culture of Jesus, but strangely enough, at the same time he makes Jesus more familiar to us. This makes reading the book a unique and uplifting experience.”
World Religions
“In an innovative study Torrey Seland introduces an original , postcolonial reading of Philo of Alexandria. Seland argues that Philo became radicalized in his view of Rome as a colonial power, and shows how Philo, although belonging to the elite, wrote from the perspective of the oppressed. Using mimicry and hybridity to analyze Philo’s expositions, Seland presents a new understanding of the political context of Philo’s texts.”
The Apostle Paul Guides the Early Church
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Nils A. Dahl was one of the great New Testament scholars of the twentieth century. These essays reveal Dahl’s main strength as an interpreter of Paul. He reads Paul’s texts with a curiosity that leads to new questions and sends readers away with new ideas. He was before his time on many issues; for instance, his studies of Paul in a Jewish context point towards the present discussions of ‘the New Paul.’ Therefore Dahl’s essays continue to inspire and challenge.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“[This book] has the rare quality that it helps us to think 'otherwise' about the Historical Jesus. We understand persons with the help of some category or model that suggests to us what they were like. The problem with categories used about Jesus is that they are either too distant historically to provide meaning to modern readers, or to modern to help us grasp the disturbing 'otherness' about Jesus. Craffert's use of 'shaman' as a social model for Jesus makes sense of the otherness of Jesus in our own world, and also helps us grasp how the faith of Early Christian communities was very different from most modern forms of Christianity.”
The Radical Jesus, the Bible, and the Great Transformation
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Doug Oakman is highly respected for his social-science studies of Jesus as a radical critic with a vision of economic justice. With this book, Oakman takes his studies of Jesus from the historical past to the political present. A strong critic of parochial and literalist Bible readings, Oakman engages in a fruitful dialogue with contemporary philosophy and politics to make the Bible speak to the essentially human in today’s world.”
World Religions
“This is a helpful introduction to the study of women in major world religions! An African perspective provides a unique focus to the presentation. A concluding chapter on ecofeminism is a very timely contribution in the present climate.”
