“Goatley deals creatively with a largely neglected angle in slave religion, and his name will undoubtedly assume its own particular authority in the field. The reading of this volume will be a wholesome exercise for those interested in the African-American slave's encounter with the ultimate questions of human existence." -Lewis V. Baldwin, retired, Vanderbilt University "Goatley has raised the continuing theodicy issue for African American Christians. He presents the presence and absence/silence of God in christological perspective. Yet his affirmation of faith allows a view of the compassion and power of God to sustain our Christian journey.”
