First and Second Peter

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Duane Watson and Terrance Callan, each of whom has written significantly on Second Peter, team up here to provide a fresh and coherent exposition of both letters--a most welcome contribution to Petrine studies and a valuable tool for reassessing the difficult question of the relationship between the two canonical letters bearing Peter's name.”

Gospel of Glory

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I read Gospel of Glory with great pleasure and with my own commentary on John within reach. I found frequent agreement, occasional disagreement, and, on every page, enrichment. The first chapter alone (‘individualism’ in John’s Gospel) is worth the price of the book. The chapter on the Gospel’s first week offers a fascinating glimpse of what Bauckham’s forthcoming commentary on John may look like, and yet Gospel of Glory is no mere appetizer but a meal in itself.”

New Testament Theology

Theology

“For decades, Howard Marshall has been a voice of thoroughness, fairness and moderation in biblical studies. Now, in a time when some are questioning the very need and legitimacy of New Testament theology, Marshall demonstrates why it must still be done and how it should be done, and then, quite simply, he does it. Biblical scholars and students on both sides of the Atlantic are once again indebted to a man who has written much and been a friend and a mentor to many.”

Reading the Gospels Today

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“For those who look only to the United States and Germany for biblical scholarship, this collection of essays on the Gospels is an eye-opener. Six of its eight contributors are from Canada, one from the United Kingdom, and one from Korea. They address issues ranging from traditional subjects such as the Synoptic problem and the historical Jesus to more recent topics of interest, including the Gospels as oral performance, reading from a global (in this case, Korean) perspective, and canonical criticism. These eight writers each bring a measure of common sense to a field sometimes plagued by technical jargon and faddism. Their no-nonsense approach should make this book a valuable supplementary text for beginning or advanced students of the Gospels in colleges and seminaries.”

Recovering the Evangelical Sacrament

Theology

“Anthony R. Cross makes a compelling case both for the inseparability of faith and baptism, and water and Spirit baptism. The evangelical insistence on justification by faith alone, he contends, should and must make room for baptism as a biblical term encompassing all three: faith, water baptism, and Spirit baptism. Arguably the most important book on baptism since George Beasley-Murray's Baptism in the New Testament, extending and enriching the argument of that seminal work.”

The Revelation of John

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“As its subtitle implies, James Resseguie’s ‘narrative commentary’ on the book of Revelation helps the reader follow in the footsteps of John the narrator. Much like John’s ‘interpreting angel’ within the book’s visions, the author allows us to hear what John heard and see what John saw, so that the sights and sounds of the book mutually interpret and enrich one another. In his hands, this last book of the Christian Bible becomes neither a coded account of first-century Roman politics nor a timetable of future events, but a story in its own right, a story of judgment and redemption to be heard afresh in every generation, not least our own. Highly recommended.”
