Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“The New Perspective on Paul has, sadly, been more controversial than illuminative of a neglected dimension of Paul's teaching on justification by faith. Professor Yinger most helpfully explains both aspects. . . . [T]his is as good an Introduction to the New Perspective and the related Pauline teaching as you will find.”
The Pauline Concept of Supernatural Powers
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
Foreword
“I expect Dr. Gatumu's book to attract a good deal of attention from those who are seriously engaged in cross-cultural communication. And I hope and pray that it will achieve its goal of facilitating the sound words of 2,000 years ago to speak with clearer and better effect to the challenges and concerns of the present.”
The Saving Righteousness of God
Theology
“In a debate where the worst of Protestant infighting has been revived, and the 'spirit of slavery' has been more influential than 'the Spirit of adoption,' Michael Bird's treatment is more than welcome. His is a calm, judicious and irenic voice amid the welter of paranoid accusation and counteraccusation, which ought to be heard widely, and -- more important -- ought to be heeded. Perhaps, then the world will be able to say again, 'See how these Christians love one another' -- without sneering.”
Christian Living
“This is a most moving book, where the reality of suffering is faced up to not as a theoretical possibility to be handled with theological sleight-of-hand, but as a harsh and devastating reality that drains energy and strains faith to the breaking point: The honest extracts from Chris's (Jeff's wife) diary which begin and end each chapter; the way the Psalms and Paul in particular spoke to Jeff at a deeper and life-sustaining level; the lessons learned through so much pain, but learned so well. This book will be as much a challenge to those whose lives are (too?) comfortable as it will be a comfort and source of strength to those for whom suffering is all too real.”
Was the Birth of Jesus According to Scripture?
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“The accounts of Jesus' birth in Matthew and Luke raise more questions regarding their historicity and meaning than any others in the Gospels. Since fulfillment is a strong feature of the accounts, Steve Moyise, a specialist in the New Testament's use of the Old Testament, is more than well suited to discuss these questions. His masterful handling of the texts and sensitive handling of problematic issues result in a book many will find both insightful and liberating.”
Wisdom and Spiritual Transcendence at Corinth
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Those who work with 1 Corinthians have long valued the sequence of essays by Richard Horsley on the conflicts and disagreements of which the letter gives plenty of evidence. However, the essays, written in the late '70s, have too often been overlooked as discussion of 1 Corinthians has become dominated by sociological and rhetorical perspectives. So it is very good news to know that the essays have been gathered together in this volume, which I warmly recommend to present-day students of 1 Corinthians.”
