A Time to Tear Down and a Time to Build Up

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Fox's sustained engagement with Ecclesiastes in the context of ancient wisdom, on which he is a significant interpreter, has enabled him to write a brilliant analysis of Qoheleth's thought and a valuable commentary that no specialist in this area dare ignore. This book will occupy a prominent place on my desk.”

Endgame

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Gladson writes with the heart of a pastor and the mind of a professor. The introduction lays the groundwork for the painstaking translation and judicious exposition that follows. His focus never veers from the original historical context, which he treats admirably. Readers unfamiliar with apocalyptic literature will come away with a deep appreciation for its response to the abuse of power.”

The Wisdom of Sirach

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Focusing on the rhetorical strategy of the sage, Walter Wilson places Sirach in the mainstream of gnomic literature of the Greeks and Romans in the early second century BCE where mentors taught the young to respect God, speak wisely and persuasively, and uphold the social order. The result is a splendid book for general readers, a pleasure to read because of the wit and wisdom of ancient authors.”

Wisdom's Wonder

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Using wonder as the interpretive clue, Bill Brown deftly juxtaposes the formation of character by Israel’s sages with the awe-inspiring universe in which that frequently disorienting process of education took place. In this way, he explores in amazing detail the richness and diversity of Proverbs, the book of Job, and Ecclesiastes.”
