Archaeology and the World of Jesus

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This is an excellent introduction to the world of Jesus through material remains such as houses, tombs, synagogues, and ritual baths. DeSilva provides a balanced and up-to-date overview of archaeological sites associated with Jesus and the New Testament, from Galilean villages to Jerusalem. Although aimed primarily at Christian readers who wish to better understand Jesus’s context, this richly illustrated book will also appeal to others interested in learning about the Holy Land in the first century.”

Enoch and the Messiah Son of Man

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Together these essays provide a comprehensive overview and in-depth analysis of the Book of Parables in 1 Enoch. Written by the leading specialists in the field, this volume is an invaluable resource for scholars of early Judaism and early Christianity.”

Excavating the Land of Jesus

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Strange provides an engaging and crystal-clear introduction to archaeology for non-specialists, focusing on Roman Galilee in the time of Jesus. He explains simply but without dumbing down how and why archaeologists dig and the differences between (and limitations of) the types of information derived from archaeological remains versus literary sources such as the Gospel accounts. Strange illustrates his discussion by describing recent discoveries such as what ongoing excavations have revealed about ancient Magdala (thought to be the hometown of Mary Magdalene), or how olive oil was produced and used in Roman Galilee. This slender volume will appeal to a broad readership and can also be used as an introductory textbook.”

John Marco Allegro

History & Biography

“This fascinating and informative biography of John Allegro will be of interest to specialists as well as to the general public. . . Scholars will find Allegro's letters to other members of the original Dead Sea Scrolls editing team to be especially valuable.”

Qumran Questions

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Sidnie White Crawford is an authority on the Dead Sea Scrolls who writes with exceptional clarity and balance. In this collection of updated essays, she tackles the thorny questions surrounding the relationship of the scrolls to the site of Qumran and the role and status of women in the sectarian community. This volume will be a valuable resource for specialists and can also be used as a textbook.”

Scribes and Scrolls at Qumran

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Crawford proposes that Qumran functioned as an Essene library and scribal center, based on a comprehensive and balanced analysis of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the archaeological remains. Her highly readable and up-to-date overview will serve as a basic resource for scholars as well as an excellent introduction to the field for nonspecialists.”

The Archaeology of Daily Life

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“In this engaging book, David Fiensy provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the people of ancient Israel in the time of Jesus, ranging from diet, dress, and dwellings to marriage, family dynamics, and occupations to diseases, mortality, and the disposal of the dead. Fiensy’s balanced and accessible presentation incorporates information from the Bible and other texts as well as archaeological remains.”

The Pharisees

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This volume provides an authoritative and comprehensive update on the Pharisees. The articles, written by leading scholars, consider the Pharisees including their reception history and legacy up to the present from multiple perspectives, based on careful analyses of diverse sources such as the Qumran scrolls, Josephus, the New Testament, rabbinic literature, and Christian writers. Written in a manner that is accessible to specialists and non-specialists alike, this volume should be considered an essential resource on the Pharisees.”

The Pharisees, Jesus, and the Politics of Roman Palestine, Volume 1

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Through a fine-grained analysis of Josephus and other ancient sources, Horsley challenges common assumptions about the Pharisees, describing them as a scribal group active in both the political and religious affairs of the Judean temple-state. Their status as ‘legal-intellectual retainers’ who advised the high priestly rulers ended with the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. Building and expanding upon his previous work, Horsley presents a paradigm-shifting synthesis of the history of the Pharisees.”

The Victorians and the Holy Land

History & Biography

“As informative as it is entertaining, this book is filled with colorful accounts of brilliant scholars, rogue treasure hunters, and pious pilgrims. Chapman masterfully weaves a spellbinding tale of the discovery of ancient Near Eastern civilizations by modern western explorers. Fun and fascinating, this book is worth reading more than once.”
