“I searched for the right compliment for Toddy, and I’d say that the knowledge that Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Eighteenth Baron Dunsany would have disapproved of Toddy is as good as it gets. Although a lifetime of years apart, they both were military men. They were both bigger than life (Dunsany, literally six feet four inches), and both had poverty of spirit—a distinct advantage if one wants to own the kingdom of heaven in the life to come. Why, then, would Dunsany have disapproved of this latter-day representative? The answer is that Dunsany was a poet, too—but, alas, a bloody awful one. Both have experience of the untamed wildness of thought which overflows into unusual turns of phrase—but Toddy can hold a line and make it his in poetry. How cross Lord Dunsany would have been with him!”
