“The book of poems by Fray Luis de León, one of the great mystics of the glorious Spanish Siglo de Oro (sixteenth and seventeenth centuries), embodies the happy act of fascinating creativity in which its author and translator, H. L. Hix, simultaneously manifests his talents as an outstanding American poet and thinker. It is the second ever complete and full translation in English of Fray Luis de León’s poetic legacy, including the source texts in Spanish.”
