A Little Book for New Preachers

Preaching & Worship

“This 'little book' on preaching packs a punch. I have found that it is the simplest expressions that are often the most profound. Matthew Kim has written such an offering—a humble yet passionate affirmation of the value of preaching, with wise advice along the way for how we might pursue its practice. Clear some time for this. You are going to want to dwell on what you find.”

A Vision for Preaching

Church Leadership & Ministry

“It is common for pastors to articulate vision statements for their churches, but it might also be helpful for pastors to describe a vision for their preaching. Kuruvilla, a leading homiletician, has thought through how he sees the task. A Vision for Preaching is well researched, thoughtful, and sometimes controversial, but fully worth consideration.”

Pastoral Ministry in the Real World

Church Leadership & Ministry

“The best books derive from hard-won experience on the ground. This is such a book. Jim Wilson is a pastor who knows his way around. The practice of your ministry will be enhanced by the opportunity to reflect on Wilson’s experience. Pastoral ministry requires knowledge, skill, and character. This book offers all three.”

Preaching and Teaching from the Old Testament

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Those of us who care about biblical preaching face an uphill climb. Those who care about effective preaching of the Old Testament find the mountain to be particularly steep. With his new book, Walter Kaiser gives the preacher a welcome boost. This book finds its place alongside recent offerings by Graeme Goldsworthy, Steven Mathewson, and Sidney Greidanus, each of whom has championed a sound biblical theology for preaching the Old Testament.”

Preaching by Ear

Church Leadership & Ministry

“This book comes like a tall glass of cold water on a hot day. For too long, we have been writing sermons, as if people were going to read them instead of listen to them. Dave McClellan believes that if our sermons are going to be heard, we need to speak them into being. He is right. This is an engaging book, entirely relevant to our present moment. I can’t wait to hear the preaching that results.”

Preaching Through Time

Preaching & Worship

“Preaching happens in time, across time, and beyond time. We preach to connect time-bound creatures with a God who exists outside of time. How we understand this connection between the ancient and the contemporary, the objective and the subjective is one of the least understood and most poorly considered aspects of the homiletic task. I am grateful that Casey Barton has been fearless enough to engage the challenge of these questions. This book will challenge you to think in directions you might not have taken time to consider. Your preaching will be better for it.”

The Devout Life

History & Biography

“Spiritual growth requires transformation of our heart as well as our head. In The Devout Life, Roger Helland encourages both, drawing on the history of the Pietist movement to affect both mind and will. This rich stream of historical insight brings fresh perspective to our contemporary interest in the spiritual disciplines.”

The Glory of Preaching

Preaching & Worship

“Preachers who wonder whether their preaching is worth the effort will find this book encouraging. Darrell Johnson believes that 'something always happens' when the Word of God is preached. Not only does he tell us what happens, but he tells us why. It is this biblical and theological grounding of the preacher's task that makes this book unique.”

The Power of Multisensory Preaching and Teaching

Preaching & Worship

“Rich Blackwood not only gives us the research, but he gives us a method that is practical, sustainable, and steeped in expository conviction. This is a book for preachers that are already good at what they do, increasing their communication quotient so as to deepen their listener's engagement with the Word.”

The Practices of Christian Preaching

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Preaching requires practice and the guidance of a wise and trustworthy practitioner; Alcántara is a good choice for this role. The Practices of Christian Preaching is a literate, diverse, and important addition to the field of homiletics.”

With Wit and Wonder

Preaching & Worship

“With Wit and Wonder is a thoughtful and thorough examination of a commonly utilized but rarely considered aspect of our preaching. Blaine Banting believes that humor is not just something we use to help people pay attention to the more serious aspects of our message, but that it can be capable of carrying the weight of the sermon--and that is no joke!”

You Are There

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“This is one of those books that must delightfully confound publishers looking to pigeonhole its market. You Are There is part travelogue and part theologue. This book is full of warmhearted stories that remind you what the church could be if it was ever able to set aside its industrial-sized aspirations. Robert Campbell puts the 'pastoral' back into pastoring, and the 'local' back into the local church. But don't overlook it for a lack of scale. This book has as much ambition and challenge as anything that I have read in recent years. Campbell offers a theology of place, surprising with insight relevant to the millennial church, even as it leads us back toward our roots.”
