Children of the Calling

History & Biography

“One of the beautiful offerings of this volume is that we are reminded that Ruth was not the proverbial 'good woman behind the good man,' but serving as an equal partner, not only sharing his ministry, but influencing his scholarship and, yes, teaching him! How fitting that Stan and Ruth should be honored by this diverse and stellar group of scholars, recalling the multi-faceted ministries of these creative, brilliant, and passionate people who embody what it means to be a part of the renewing work of the holy spirit in the church and world.”

Empowered Voices

History & Biography

“The careful and reflective research represented in this volume demonstrates, once again, that women in the Pentecostal movement don’t just ‘stand behind good men’ as supports or provide the ‘backbone of the church.’ What these authors recover is more evidence of the feminine root of the Pentecostal movement, where women are leaders: apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, and evangelists—in Scandinavia as in the global movement, then and now.”

God Forgive Us for Being Women

“Words matter—especially in a tradition whose hallmarks, it can be argued, are inspired speech. Pentecostals live in a space defined by orality: ‘speaking in tongues,’ prophecy, exhortation, preaching, and the ‘call’ to ministry. Joy Qualls brings the importance of the rhetoric that both empowers and disempowers women in one Pentecostal denomination to the conversation, at a time when the voices of harassed and abused women have finally taken center-stage. Words matter.”

John Wesley

History & Biography

“In John Wesley: Optimist of Grace, Hal Knight provides an engaging and highly accessible introduction to the development of Wesley’s theology, occurring over his lifetime as an Anglican but in conversation with Calvinists and Pietists from the Continent. The real contribution of this volume is that is presents Wesley’s commitment to holiness of heart and life as a theology for the renewal of Christianity, worked out in missional contexts and holy conference, in response to the transforming Spirit of God. Knight is not only a capable Wesley scholar, but, more importantly, a Wesleyan scholar, writing with his own optimism about the loving grace of God, ever renewing the Church.”

Women and the Landscape of American Higher Education

History & Biography

“In an age when a woman has made a close run for U.S. President and another for Vice-President; when three women have served their country as Secretary of State and three have served or serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and another has just been nominated, it seems incredible that women are still greatly under-represented in the leadership of Holiness and Pentecostal colleges, universities, and seminaries. What accounts for this dearth is left to another study. Dr. Ruelas has, however, provided a very helpful challenge to this present reality by looking at the past origins of higher education in the Holiness and Pentecostal traditions, a past that was dominated by the innovation and leadership of dedicated women of faith and vision.”
