“The speaker of these poems seeks enchantment in a world that steadfastly refuses to offer more than flashes. Sometimes comitragic, sometimes simply meditative, the voice of this twenty-first-century seeker resonates like that of an idealistic—thus inevitably disappointed—friend. Whether pondering Greek mythology or the latest war, social media or a placid icon, Johnson’s poems embody an impressive balance between world-weariness and determined reverence.”
