Converting Christians to the Jesus Ethic

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“This book transcends the culture wars that sometimes masquerade as 'religious ethics.' Addressing readers across the religious and cultural spectrum who take seriously the issues of social and personal ethics that polarize American society, Pregeant calls church insiders to put their faith into practice, following the example and teaching of Jesus as the heart and core of Christian ethics. This book can ignite and fuel discussion in the academic and religious settings and is especially recommended to church study groups and their leaders.”

For the Healing of the Nation

Ethics, Culture & Social Issues

“Written with conviction, compassion, and clarity, this book is packed with readable information and insights for people concerned about our nation--and who want to understand its politics in terms of biblical perceptions of justice and love. Pregeant not only analyzes but also responds with realistic and practical proposals. Personal stories drawn from his experience of growing up in Louisiana during the civil rights struggle, and sharing his own inner struggles on revenge and the death penalty, enrich the argument and keep its feet on the ground.”

Preaching & Worship

“Allen helps the preacher to listen to both text and congregation, and to construct a sturdy bridge—with two-way traffic—binding each to the other.”

Story, Ritual, Prophecy, Wisdom

Discipleship & Christian Education

“This book presents us with a clear and captivating fusion of mainstream biblical scholarship and up-to-date pedagogy. The authors, each with solid experience as teachers in university and congregational settings, offer a handle on hearing and communicating the biblical message for all those who are beyond the proof-texting stage or would like to be. The book is a gift to the academy, the church, and the world.”

The First One Hundred Years of Christianity

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Written clearly and judiciously, this up-to-date integration of early Christian history and theology will be of interest to all students of the beginnings of Christianity and the formation of the New Testament. This succinct volume should instantly become a standard textbook and the go-to book for all interested students, teachers, and pastors. Thanks go to Baker Academic and James Thompson for making this important book available in English.”

The Gospel of Matthew, vol 1

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“I have learned much from this comprehensive and well-written commentary. Among its several strong points, my top three are: (1) Its crisp prose is written with elegant and straightforward clarity. Without undue oversimplification, it is a pleasure to read. (2) It is up to date on international Matthean scholarship, without merely cataloging previous research or seeking a niche for its own novelty. (3) It is anchored in the history of the Jewish-Christian Matthean church in its context in the Hellenistic world. Without being driven by an agenda of contemporary relevance, the commentary bridges the world of the text to the contemporary world in a way that encourages readers to construct their own hermeneutical bridges on a solid exegetical foundation. Walter Wilson’s commentary is a gift that is immediately helpful. It will remain a reliable go-to resource for years to come.”

The Rhetoric of the Gospel, Second Edition

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Here is a book for all who appreciate the power of language. Written for those charged to communicate the faith of the New Testament witnesses, it is also to be commended to those who may be suspicious of either rhetoric or the Bible. With understated grace, Clifton Black’s updated 2001 collection of essays instructs and charms, and embodies what it is getting at.”

The Wisdom of Jesus

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Basing his construction of the distinctive figure of Jesus on the Jesus Seminar's minimal reconstruction of the authentic sayings of Jesus, Hedrick contrasts him with both the earlier tradition of Israel and the later tradition of the church. Both those who affirm this approach and those who challenge it can be informed by this provocative study.”
