A History of Luther Seminary

History & Biography

“Mark Granquist’s history of Luther Seminary places the story of this vital school in the midst of the challenges of the world. Faculty and alums developed the capacity to turn in new directions as times and the church required. Granquist helps us see in a compelling way the intimate and dynamic relationship between a seminary and the congregations it serves as they together seek to be relevant for the dramatic challenges facing the churches today.”

Ontological and Imputed Righteousness in Luther and the Lutheran Confessions

Theology

“Harold Hofstad has written an accessible primer on the defining Lutheran doctrine of justification by grace through faith. His careful attention to the development of this teaching in the Reformation period and his focus on its continuing relevance provides a foundation for informed Lutheran engagement with ecumenical and interfaith partners.”

The Annotated Luther, Volume 1

History & Biography

“The Annotated Luther series provides a very welcome resource for meeting Luther again in the contemporary world. With language refreshed for our time, we can see more clearly Luther as a man who is actively grappling with a society undergoing dramatic challenges economically, religiously, and socially. By providing skilled commentary from scholars around the world and from diverse theological perspectives, this work will be of great help for modern Christians seeking to adapt and extend the insights from the Reformation to modern challenges.”

These Words We Speak

Theology

“Matthew E. Borrasso is an astute thinker and a clear writer for American Lutherans. His work addresses the major theological dynamic that drives Lutheran teaching: the art of distinguishing between law and gospel in our theology and preaching. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America both draw from scripture to support their understanding of law and gospel in the here and now, but scripture informs them in quite different ways. Using the case study of each church's teaching on abortion in the period between Roe and Dobbs, Borrasso shows how each church applies its understanding of the gospel to painful life choices. Borrasso is a faithful LCMS pastor and theologian but describes the ELCA approach fairly, and for this careful tending of words, he is to be thanked.”
