A People's History of Christianity
History & Biography
“These stories may come up from the basement of church history, but news about their existence deserves to be shouted from the housetops.”
History & Biography
“By focusing on two individuals of note--neither of them so noted that we have them typed in advance--he provides a picture of the striving and struggling that went on among students whose crises cannot be written off as merely adolescent. This he follows with a story of how they worked through their struggles and how sensitive they had to be to people they feared they would hurt, or who they were sure would not understand. And Harrold serves well also by providing that close-up of a struggle at a single place, not an insignificant one: the University of Michigan was the largest university in the United States in the period in which these dramas took place. Michigan was much observed as a scene of experiment, and this book shows what the experimenting looked like. . . . I want to invite readers to enjoy, be informed by, and to reflect after reading this previously untold story.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Strozier brings down to earth and to our time believers who say they cannot wait for an end to earth and the beginning of God's new time. They may carry the kind of 'Repent!' sign one associates with prophets in cartoons. Mr. Strozier figuratively carries one that says 'Understand!”
“One does not have to be a Missouri Synod Lutheran, a Lutheran at all, a Christian or a religious person at all, to become engaged by these pages. They deal with basic human themes. . . I think most will be impressed by [Mary Todd's] fair-mindedness, her calm tone of voice, her patient story-telling, and her invitation to readers to find more angles than before on the sex-and-authority combination that will mark both resistant and bold church bodies and individuals alike.”
Christians and a Land Called Holy
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Reading Christians and a Land Called Holy is like strolling through the souk with two veteran guides. Chuck and Robert walk the reader through a virtual marketplace of ideas and actions for the soul, the heart, and the helping hand.”
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“Richard L. Morgan's From Grim to Green Pastures writes of reflections that came to him during his time of illness. This book offers 81 two-page meditations properly sized for those who are being cared for, or those who busily care for them. His excerpts about a "spirituality of illness," serve us well.”

Preaching & Worship
“Everything about this book suggests that it is a most serious, most ambitious, most scholarly approach. Even the bibliographies make good reading. It's too good a book to limit only to people who preach.”
Theology
“Simonson is a patient and trustworthy guide for those who would traverse at least some of the spiritual ground on which Edwards was the American pathfinder.”
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“Read him, and again I say unto you, please read him.”
Practical Knowledge of the Soul
Philosophy
“I was influenced enough by Rosenstock-Huessy to write a now forgotten book on his theme Respondeo etsi mutabor, 'I respond although I will be changed.' The motto would be on my coat-of-arms if I had one.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
Foreword
“These are not sentimental or jargon-ridden 'care and share' outpourings. They aim to be directly about their business of carrying on the conversation between a self-disclosing God and the people collected. The agent will be the pastor who prays off these pages, using words by an expressive author who has the grace to move herself off stage and let the prayers be those of 'us' and not 'me.' Let us pray.”
