Aspects of Assemblies of God Origins
History & Biography
“Daniel Isgrigg produces a riveting and timely account of the Assemblies of God. Instead of a decade-to-decade rehearsal of events, he reimagines the Assemblies of God story by peering through critical theological, political, social, and ecumenical windows. Isgrigg argues persuasively that an honest history wrestles continuously with the evolution of theologies, alliances, and worldviews. He is both a sympathetic and dedicated insider, and a constructive critic.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Whether Keener delves into his favorite topics such as socio-historical contexts, matters of historical reliability, or Luke’s theology of signs and wonders, these hidden gems are now available in a convenient volume on Acts that encompasses two decades of research by a top-tier Lukan scholar.”
Theology
“Beers brings two undervalued Pauline letters out of the shadows and reestablishes their contributions to God's redemptive plan for humans and the renewal of creation. Beers establishes that in Colossians the ever-pastoral pastor Paul links his cosmic Christology to daily discipleship. In discussing Philemon, she extends Paul's specific exhortation toward communal embodiment of restorative hospitality. Beers reminds readers that gospel-centered theology prepares a path for flourishing Christian relationships and communities.”
History & Biography
“Most Pentecostals have no idea of their pacifist heritage. In this volume, now revised and into its third decade, Jay Beaman produces a succinct synopsis of early Pentecostal responses to war. He produces not only primary evidence and superb data analysis, but also captures the pulse of a movement. Beaman implores the current generation to revisit a waning heritage by linking pacifism with their counter-cultural and prophetic worldview based upon unwavering allegiance to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“For a world—and a church—addicted to the fast and furious, Joseph Lear reimagines the gathered people of God. Lear interrogates elaborate worship schemes that strive primarily for relevance and effectiveness. He envisions, instead, a church that creates a trinitarian, eucharistic, and Pentecostal liturgy. Lear does not offer yet another ‘how-to’ manual, but he offers a path toward prayer-filled, embodied, and celebratory liturgy. I recommend this book for every Assemblies of God pastor on a quest for a slow burn revival.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this timely monograph, Brian Lidbeck addresses the all too common separation of Christology and pneumatology. He traces Luke’s symphonic integration of the resurrected Jesus as bestower of the Spirit and the burden of the Spirit to reveal the resurrected Jesus. Lidbeck further locates Luke’s robust convergence of resurrection and Spirit as eschatological fulfillment of the grand biblical narrative. A comprehensive, robust, and delightful contribution to Lukan studies.”
Preaching & Worship
“‘God really spoke to me today!’ Through a sermon? Does the Holy Spirit reveal Jesus in real time? What if congregants could understand theologically what they are actually experiencing through genuinely anointed preaching? And what if preachers would envision their craft as Spirit-anointed sacramental preaching! Gary Tyra invites preachers to prayerfully experience the presence of Jesus during both the preparation of the sermon and its delivery.”
The Charismatic Theology of St. Luke
Theology
“The most influential work on Lukan pneumatology of this generation! Twenty-five years ago, Stronstad solidified my earliest convictions about the activity of the Holy Spirit. Today, my students echo the same refrain. Those familiar with pentecostal/charismatic teaching on the Spirit-filled life find fodder for fresh reflection and exploration. Those not familiar receive a challenging invitation for renewed pursuit of the Spirit. I could not be happier that this book has been revised and will remain in print.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Nickolas Fox embarks on an epic adventure through Luke’s Gospel. He applies Joseph Campbell’s theory of a hero’s journey to the life of Jesus. Scholars, pastors, and students will be transported beyond exhausting debates over historical questions. Instead, they will discover with the Lukan Jesus the intersection of ordinary and enchanted worlds. Fox dares his readers to experience Jesus’s transhistorical adventure through promise, trial, martyrdom, and resurrection. If the Gospels seem dull and too familiar, read this book!”
The Spirit and Race in John’s Gospel
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Estrada invites readers of John’s Gospel to encounter so much more than a rehearsal of the life of Jesus. The Gospel transforms followers of Jesus into hospitable communities that are racially diverse, inclusive, and barrier-breaking. Estrada captures a message no less important for a contemporary world marked by hatred and division.”
Trajectories in the Book of Acts
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“"Anyone familiar with Pentecostals knows full well the importance they place on Acts for their theology and praxis. Contributors to this volume address enduring questions surrounding Lukan pneumatology, missions, and hermeneutics, but alongside contemporary scholarship and current ecclesial concerns. The essayists implore not only Pentecostals but all Christians to give careful consideration to Luke's message for the twenty-first century.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In the beginning, God created stories. Great stories keep readers on edge by way of thick plot lines, complex characters, manipulation of tricksters, and reversals that lead to tragedy or redemption. Lowdermilk likens recognition scenes (aha moments) of the Patriarchs in Genesis to the life of Peter in the Gospel of John. Spoiler alert: just when you think the show is over, Jesus the counter-manipulator appears out of nowhere and changes everything.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Joseph Lear has made an indelible contribution to Lukan studies. He traces Lukan eschatology and ethics not as parallel motifs, but as part of an intricate literary web. Lear weaves together an array of Lukan motifs such as shared possessions, community formation, miracles and resurrection, and the kingdom of God to produce an impressive, delightful, and timely read.”
