Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Brilliant. . . . Collins's leading scholarship is always adorned with clarity and creativity. The essays gathered here, including several previously unpublished, provide his assessment of the field since the 1970s, dealing lucidly with the major issues, including pseudepigraphy, ethics, and politics. This will become a milestone collection on apocalyptic studies.”

Creation and Chaos in the Primeval Era and the Eschaton

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“Hermann Gunkel's epochal Schöpfung und Chaos marked a major shift in biblical studies when it appeared in 1895, but it has never been translated. K. William Whitney here presents the world of scholarship with a polished and sophisticated English translation that will stimulate readers to rethink basic assumptions. His excellent preface puts Gunkel's work into its context and draws out its importance for the twenty-first century. Whitney has filled out and enriched the original indexes and bibliography, making the book easier to consult. This work is destined to be a cornerstone for students and scholars alike.”

Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, vol. 1

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“This timely and highly significant work makes available a range of works from as early as the late ninth century BCE to the Byzantine period. The book complements admirably the various collections of ‘apocrypha and pseudepigrapha’ that have been published from the beginning of the twentieth century on. . . . The texts in this volume are translated from Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Syriac, Armenian, and other languages, and this book makes most of them available in English for the first time. This work is essential for students of the Jewish and Christian traditions, Eastern and Western.”
