“In Beyond Shame, Matthias Roberts sets up a theologically thoughtful and accessible framework in which to think specifically through the entanglement of sex and shame in our culture. His personal stories and how he lives this out make this work compelling, and it challenges me to actively live in the beauty of this struggle.”
Christian Living
“Micha Boyett’s Blessed Are the Rest of Us is a deeply moving meditation on being a part of, and participating in, the dream of God for us. It makes perfect sense that a poet like Micha would lead us to engage the Beatitudes as poetry and as prophetic. Her stirring rendition is a hopeful light as she shows us how God’s dream is the way to see the world in all its beauty and heartache, and she invites us to the kind of loving and living that is a gift. Through the stories of her family’s life together, their journey together, I understand blessing in a new way, in flesh-and-blood ways, skin-and-bones ways, tears-and-laughter ways—where our blessedness is not only a wonder but good and true.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“In Church Camp, Cara Meredith transports me to the world of so many of my own summers. Walking us through the fascinating subculture that is a staple of evangelical Christianity, Cara shows us the hidden but not always subtle entanglements of whiteness and privilege in the overarching project around conversion. But Cara offers, too, a surprising and different way into an experience -- with all its flaws and quirkiness -- that might actually tell us something surprising about humanity.”
Evangelism in an Age of Despair
Christian Living
“In Evangelism in an Age of Despair, Andrew Root piques my curiosity about the recovery of evangelism in our late-modern context. Somehow he compels me to see its surprising and miraculous usefulness for church ministry. Giving us more than a history on evangelism or another how-to program, he completely reframes it as ‘the reception of care that places a person on a path of encounter with the divine.’ The use of words such as care and consolation in his framing is especially resonant. It underscores a discipleship that is oriented to the human—and the relationship between the human and the divine—in such a way that the good news is an invitation to a way of being in this world that lifts up all the complexity of being human: sorrow, blessing, conflict, and the persistence of God’s presence. As always, Root’s work is rich and generative, and I’m eager to ponder this more.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“Dupree offers a lovely meditation on meditation, and all the possible permutations of it in the ordinary and everyday, and in the most sacred of spaces. It is a wonderful and thoughtful resource for those in the vocation of ministry, but also for the whole priesthood of all believers. Anyone who desires to follow in the way of Christ with more attentiveness through many practices of prayer should read this book.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Through one of the most unexpected journeys, Matthew Fleming leads us to discover a God who is present and 'making all things new.' What I love most about Fleming's work here is the deeper invitation to a way of reading the Bible. Part commentary, part memoir, part history, part interpretation, the book defies genre and helps us practice a relationship with the Living Word through engaging Revelation. As I see it modeled by Fleming, this means sharing our story with the Living Word, which is active and dynamic, and compels our imagination toward a beautiful world that we are called to bear witness to and usher in the here-and-now.”
History & Biography
“This book offers all a vital resource for engaging questions of culture, ancestry, spirituality, and belonging, especially for communities navigating faith beyond assimilation, silence, and inherited theological fear.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“A brave and beautiful reckoning with what it means to inherit a fractured faith--and to mend it not by hiding the brokenness but by illuminating it. Kristin Lee writes with the meticulous clarity of a physician, the sweet honesty of a daughter, and the profound wisdom of one who has wrestled with God in the shadow of both immigrant churches and white evangelicalism. Drawing richly from her own story and the stories of others, Lee offers readers a vision of Asian American Christianity that is both deeply rooted and gloriously expansive. This book is not only a balm for the disillusioned--it is a theological invitation to all to rebuild with grace, solidarity, and shimmering hope.”
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“In Wounded Pastors , Howard and Fenimore offer us a compassionate resource for clergy to pragmatically care for themselves. When we think of care as something more than a fuzzy feeling proximate to love or kindness or even ministry but as a necessity for survival, something like food or air, then we see just how important this book is for sustaining our vocation. The authors come alongside us to help us recognize and engage actively in the ongoing healing of our wounds so that we might see how we courageously enact healing in our churches.”
Children & Youth
“Nate Stucky does a courageous and beautiful work in this book delving into Sabbath. It is a breath of fresh air in the midst of the more recent deluge of self-help, self-care, ‘unplugging’ programs that often miss the crucial center of rest, and why we rest, and that is to simply be God's beloved. Nate gifts us with a rich reminder through story, biblical texts, and an accessible theological framework that will deepen our relationships to God, to our own selves, to each other.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Hollowell and McGhee do something really remarkable here by giving us Baldwin's life story (but not just his biography), his works (and not just a lit review), and his activism (not just a how-to manual). I love encountering Baldwin in this way--it's fresh and hopeful, and it will be meaningful to those who want to live out Baldwin's vision.”
