A History of Christian Theology

Theology

“Under Gerald Bray’s able pen, the history of Christian thought comes to life. Bray’s Trinitarian way of framing the story of Christian doctrine is a creative and helpful contribution to the discipline. His familiarity with the sources from every branch of the Christian tree is refreshing—and enviable! His evenhanded narrative—mixed with periodic personal commentary that is often witty, always insightful, and occasionally provocative—makes this book a delight to read. A History of Christian Theology will be essential reading for scholars and students for years to come. Highly recommended.”

Andrew Fuller’s Theology of Revival

Theology

“Andrew Fuller was at the center of a revival movement among the English Particular Baptists that led to a missionary awakening across the English-speaking world. In this important study, Ryan Rindels ably demonstrates that Fuller’s theology of revival was an extension of his larger theological vision for reconciling divine sovereignty and human responsibility. This is a needed contribution to Fuller studies.”

Charles Simeon

History & Biography

“Charles Simeon was one of the most important evangelical leaders in England during his long lifetime. But Simeon was first and foremost a parish pastor in the important university town of Cambridge. In this helpful study, Zack DiPrima offers a comprehensive introduction to Simeon’s pastoral theology. DiPrima helps historians to better understand Simeon’s life, thought, and legacy. Perhaps just as important, the book commends Simeon as a compelling, even inspiring role model for contemporary pastors.”

Christological Anthropology in Historical Perspective

Theology

“At different periods in Christian history, different doctrines have ascended to the center of theological debate. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, the doctrine of humanity seems to be near the epicenter. I’m grateful to Marc Cortez for this helpful, judicious survey of how different theologians have grounded their anthropology in their understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Christological Anthropology in Historical Perspective is a welcome contribution to ongoing discussions of human nature. As in many doctrinal discussions, we need to look to the past for wisdom for the present and future. Cortez helps us to do just that in this timely book. Highly recommended.”

Confident Witness

Evangelism & Missions

“Jesus’s final marching orders to his earliest followers were to make disciples of people in all nations. This Great Commission remains the heart of the church’s mission. Confident Witness brings together scholar-practitioners, in a variety of academic disciplines and with a wealth of ministry experiences, who together offer a holistic case for a renewed commitment to the advance of the gospel. Readers will see the importance of cultivating postures, embracing practices, and building institutions that reinforce our obedience to the Great Commission in an increasingly post-Christian West—for the glory of God and the advance of his kingdom among all nations.”

Grimké on the Christian Life

Christian Living

“I’m heartened that evangelicals are rediscovering the life and legacy of Francis Grimké. In this helpful book, Drew Martin shows how Grimké articulated a vision of the Christian life that was theologically conservative, confessionally Reformed, contextually sensitive, and socially progressive in matters of racial equality. Many will find Grimké a wise guide for navigating the theological and ethical tensions of our own culture. Grimké on the Christian Life is a great addition to a stellar series.”

Habits of Grace

Christian Living

“David Mathis has provided us with a gospel-driven, Word-centered, Christ-exalting vision of Christian spiritual practices. Furthermore, he understands that sanctification is a community project: the local church rightly looms large in Habits of Grace. This book is perfect for small group study, devotional reading, or for passing on to a friend who is thinking about this topic for the first time. I give it my highest recommendation.”

Healthy Leadership for Thriving Organizations

World Religions

“In this excellent and needed book, Justin Irving engages widely with Scripture and draws on helpful insights from the field of leadership studies to equip Christian leaders to pursue faithfulness for the glory of God and the flourishing of the organizations they are called to steward. I look forward to assigning this book in my own classes on leadership. Highly recommended.”

Let Men Be Free

History & Biography

“Let Men Be Free is an impressive work of historical scholarship. Obbie Tyler Todd ably demonstrates how the historic Baptist commitment to soul freedom animated Baptist political engagement during the early republic. Along the way, white Baptist thes moved from the periphery of persecuted dissenters to center of antebellum American evangelicalism. This is the sort of monograph that will inspire a flurry of scholarly articles and doctoral dissertations. Highly recommended.”

Lost in Wonder, Love, and Praise

Arts & Literature

“Theology is art as much as it is science. This is especially true when the glory of our Triune God in his works of creation and redemption are celebrated through the medium of poetry. My friend and former pastor Justin Wainscott is a contemporary pastor-poet-theologian whom God has gifted to set sacred truths to moving verse. In doing so, Justin takes upon himself the mantle of Wesley and Dutton, of Rossetti and Donne, of Hopkins and Bradstreet. Whether his hymns and poems endure for centuries like the works of these great artist-theologians is a matter left to God’s providence. But for such a time as this, his poems and hymns are a gift to the church. Take up and read.”

Rethinking Baptism

Theology

“Fowler makes an exegetical case for his proposal and answers key questions about his views. While I do not agree with all of Fowler's conclusions, I commend Rethinking Baptism as a winsome, accessible argument for Baptist sacramentalism.”

Sacramental Sermons

Preaching & Worship

“I’m not part of the Pentecostal or Charismatic traditions. However, as a ‘cautious continuationist’ I still resonated deeply with Gary Tyra’s Sacramental Sermons. It’s theologically rich, historically informed, devotionally warm, and homiletically practical. I heartily commend this book to every preacher of God’s word who desires to better understand the work of the Holy Spirit in the preparation, delivery, and impact of our sermons.”

That His Spirit May Be Saved

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Kimble helpfully reminds us that church discipline, when practiced biblically and lovingly, is both a provisional judgment and a key means of grace that the Lord uses to bring wandering sheep to repentance and to separate potential wolves from the flock. Kimble presents a compelling biblical, historical, and theological argument for recovering the faithful practice of redemptive church discipline.”

The Beginning of Baptist Ecclesiology

History & Biography

“Following Helwys, early Baptist ecclesiology was covenantal, congregational, and credobaptist. This book will be helpful to scholars interested in studying--and preserving--this sort of distinctively Baptist ecclesiology in a post-denominational age.”

The Characters of Creation

Biblical Studies & Commentaries

“What we believe about origins necessarily influences everything else we believe. The Bible gives us the true story of how we all got here, and in The Characters of Creation Dan Darling does a great job of explaining that story and reminding us why it matters. Like his previous books in this series, Dan focuses on the characters—the people—who were key participants in the story of creation. In so doing, he helps us to better focus attention on the Main Character: the One who created all things and who will one day finish His work of re-creation, to the eternal praise of His glory.”

The Christian Mind of C. S. Lewis

Arts & Literature

“No man has influenced my understanding of what it means to think Christianly as much as C. S. Lewis. And no man has influenced my understanding of what it means to be a Christian academic as much as Michael Travers. I fell in love with Lewis the first time as a college freshman. I fell in love with Lewis a second time in large part through my friendship with Michael. These essays offer helpful entryways into Lewis’s thought through many different, complementary doorways. Along the way, they also serve as a fitting tribute to Michael Travers’s legacy as a Christian gentleman and Christ-centered scholar.”

The Collected Writings of James Leo Garrett Jr., 1950–2015: Volume Five

Theology

“Garrett is a Southern Baptist statesman-theologian in a denomination that has often needed more of each. . . . Wyman Richardson has performed a great service to all of us by making Garrett’s collected writings more widely available. These volumes are essential reading for everyone interested in Southern Baptist history, identity, and theology, as well as the place of the Baptist branch on the wider family tree of orthodox Christianity.”

The Collected Writings of James Leo Garrett Jr., 1950–2015: Volume Two

History & Biography

“James Leo Garrett is a Southern Baptist statesman-theologian in a denomination that has often needed more of each. He has consistently modeled a synthesis of sturdy Baptist conviction and warm-hearted evangelicalism that continues to influence those committed to both the Baptist tradition and the evangelical project. Over the years, Garrett’s many books have deeply influenced thousands of pastors and missionaries, yet his dozens of shorter essays and contributed chapters have heretofore been accessible mostly to his fellow scholars. For that reason, Wyman Richardson has performed a great service to all of us by making Garrett’s collected writings more widely available. These volumes are essential reading for everyone interested in Southern Baptist history, identity, and theology, as well as the place of the Baptist branch on the wider family tree of orthodox Christianity.”

The Glory Now Revealed

Christian Living

“I’m so grateful to Andy Davis for his rich, pastoral meditations on heaven. In The Glory Now Revealed, Andy shows from Scripture and the best of the Christian tradition that our glorification will include a much fuller understanding of how God was always at work during our particular earthly journeys and throughout all of redemptive history. Reading this book only causes me to long more for that day when I experience that beatific vision and when all of my sins, shortcomings, sufferings, sorrows, and sicknesses are no longer my present reality but rather are fully redeemed parts of my testimony—to the praise of God’s glorious grace!”
