Divine Therapeia and the Sermon

Preaching & Worship

“Pembroke develops his arguments in a thoroughly theological and imaginative way, and the recovery of the form of preaching that he advances will make a significant contribution to the task of disciple-formation that is the greatest need if we are to be true to our calling to be the church and make Christ known. This book deserves to be read by all those preparing men and women to become faithful preachers, instilling in them a passion for this kind of preaching accompanied by the skills to do so effectively.”

Forming Ministers or Training Leaders?

Church Leadership & Ministry

“Many years ago, I 'trained for ministry' as a Baptist, and had that process occurred a generation earlier I would have been 'theologically educated.' Now, the language used is quite rightly 'ministerial formation,' and Anthony Clarke's fascinating book fleshes out what that might mean for Baptists. . . . I have followed Anthony Clarke's research at a distance, and this book's roots in empirical research provides evidence for what he proposes, and which I enthusiastically endorse. . . . This book is an important contribution to the work of discovering what such formation might look like in the twenty-first century, and deserves to be read not just by those whose task is to provide that formation, but all who seek to offer ministry in Christlike ways—whether they be Baptists or not—as part of a community of practice.”

How Real Is Hell?

Theology

“Until recently, Evangelicals believed that hell was a place of eternal conscious suffering, even if preachers no longer ‘dangled the feet’ of their congregations over its imagined flames. This is now contested ground, and Steve Barber has helped us understand why this belief is no longer widespread by exploring the biblical texts that shape a range of views. This is an academically rigorous, yet eminently readable and pastorally sensitive book—the fruit of research at Oxford.”
