Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Anyone who likes the Bible will love this book! In this tour de force, providing a hundred answers to common and critical questions about the Bible, Lee McDonald—the world’s leading authority on how the Bible was composed and finalized in its various forms—explains how the Holy Writ was written, and also how to embrace its inspired and inspiring authority. With the addition of striking photo-images of ancient texts, this book stands alone as a state-of-the-art contribution on this important subject. A must-read, for sure!”
A Commentary on the Gospel of John
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Displaying notably solid judgment and lucid insight, the lifetime Johannine study of one of Europe’s leading New Testament scholars is now available to the English-speaking world in this clear and accessible form. By interpreting the Fourth Gospel’s synchronicity of tradition within a diachronicity of situation, Johannes Beutler not only illumines our understandings of John’s message for its original audiences; he also unveils its meanings helpfully for readers today. A must-read for John’s interpreters!”
Evangelism & Missions
“In this fine book by Nancy Thomas, the history of the Bolivian Friends Church (INELA) is outlined in clear and engaging form. It tells the story of one of the most successful missionary projects in the twentieth century, and it also sheds light on how the Spirit’s leadings helped people overcome obstacles and challenges, making advances for the kingdom in the highlands of South America.”
A Pneumatology of Race in the Gospel of John
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this important book, Rodolfo Estrada helpfully interprets John’s pneumatology in the light of religious, ethnic, and sociological tensions then and now, illuminating how John’s message might help today’s readers transcend such divisions and boundaries. Not only is this a good book; it offers an invaluable key to overcoming prejudice, dehumanization, and hatred across the bounds of time and space. A must-read for ethnicity and biblical studies alike!”
Christian Living
“What philosophers across the ages have described as ‘the good life’ Jesus redefines as ‘the blessed life,’ but not without some surprising promises. In the lucid and devotional prose of Paul Louis Metzger, the Beatitudes of Jesus are no mere platitudes. They challenge conventional notions of success and popularity, revealing the paradoxes of the upside-down kingdom. This book is a must-read—chock full of life-transforming and world-changing possibilities.”
Biblical Theological Investigations into the Incomprehensibility of God
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“One fact that is important to comprehend in biblical theology is the incomprehensibility of God within the biblical corpus. Indeed, the hiddenness of God in the First and Second Testaments reminds us of the transformative power of the Divine Presence and the human necessity of God’s saving-revealing work. In this fine international collection gathered by Francois Viljoen and Albert Coetsee of NWU Potchefstroom, readers will become reacquainted with holy mysteries in biblical times, as well as today. A must-read for Bible readers and theologians alike!”
Discovering Humor in the Bible
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Howard Macy's explorer's guide to discovering humor in the Bible not only charts new paths; it also illumines the territory. From the blind seer and the talking donkey to straining a gnat and swallowing a camel, the wit and wisdom of a gifted Bible teacher come through in ways that open us to the life-changing message of the Bible and the truth about ourselves. Read this book and you will never be able to view the Bible the same way again. What Elton Trueblood ventured a generation ago, Howard Macy has now achieved. Lucid, penetrating, and also fun!”
Diving into the Gospel of John
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this new and readable introduction to the Gospel of John, Bruce Reichenbach guides readers through eleven lenses—or ‘books’—through which to view ‘the beauty, architectural and theological integrity, richness of thought and characters, symbolic ideas, and penetrating themes and insights the Gospel expresses.’ In so doing, he follows the synchronic approach of Alan Culpepper while also embracing the memory-theory approach of Tom Thatcher, addressing the Johannine riddles lucidly to the benefit of the reader. I like this book!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this exceptional collection of essays honoring an exceptional scholar, not only do leading scholars internationally affirm the important work of Marianne Meye Thompson; they further it with their first-rate contributions. While appreciation for the fleshly humanity of Jesus in the Gospel of John is advanced by her work, so is the central paradox of the Incarnation furthered by these essays. It is precisely in the flesh-becoming Word that the Shekinah presence and glory of God are revealed and encountered. A must-read for biblical scholars and theologians alike!”
Engaging Jesus with Our Senses
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“While the theological content of the Gospels is highly significant, the tactile witness of their accounts packs a powerful punch. From the flesh wounds of Jesus to the smell of the nard at the anointing, the Gospels not only exhort us to ‘listen up’; they invite us also to ‘come and see.’ In this lucid treatment of engaging the senses by Jeannine Hanger, the Gospel narratives form a literary bridge between sensory experience back then and experiential encounters with the subject of the texts—Jesus—in the here and now.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this thoughtful and clearly written book, James Riley Strange explains how and why archaeologists excavate the land where Jesus walked. In short, rather than seeking to confirm or deny a Gospel account, today's archaeologists simply seek to understand ancient people and their values. In noting how and where archaeologists dig, the author elucidates the connections between ancient texts and modern technologies in ways that help readers of the Gospels better understand Jesus and his ministry in the light of first-century material culture. A must-read for students of Jesus, the Gospels, and archaeology, for sure!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“From individual to community, from glory to the cross, from sacraments to dualism, from the call of the disciples to their later witness, Gospel of Glory breaks new ground. Not only is John’s narrative now welcomed to be read alongside the Synoptics in discerning the Jesus of history, but the Synoptics can now be read side by side fruitfully as informing the Christ of faith. Readers of John’s Gospel—and of the others—will want to read this book!”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Having already established himself as a leading authority on prayer in the Fourth Gospel, Scott Adams now expands his treatment of prayer to the Johannine Epistles and Apocalypse as well. In seeing the purpose of prayer as partnership with Christ in the furthering of his will and work in the world, authentic prayer bears extensive spiritual, social, ethical, and political implications. An excellent book on a timeless subject!”
“Following the tradition of the great universities of Britain and Europe, McMaster Divinity College has not only featured its endowed chairs by holding inaugural lectures, but thanks to Stanley Porter, these recent lectures have been gathered into a helpful collection that will serve the church, the academy, and society. These state-of-the-art essays bring to bear the finest of theological and biblical scholarship upon contemporary issues of the day. Readable and profitable, this is an impressive collection, indeed!”
Interpreting the Gospel of John
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“An excellent text for the classroom and personal study alike! In his newly revised introduction, Gary Burge offers a highly accessible understanding of the essential issues needed for meaningful interpretations of the Gospel of John. As a highly trustworthy guide to this amazing Gospel, Burge empowers biblical interpretation at its best!”
Apologetics
“In this lucid and readable book addressing the similarities and differences between the Gospels, Michael Licona solves most of these biblical riddles by explaining how the Gospels were written and how they also are related to each other. When viewed in the genre of contemporary Greco-Roman biography, distinctive features are seen to be rooted in the particulars of historical memory, theological interests of the Evangelists, and the audiences for which they were writing. In explaining how and why the Gospels were written, their authority comes through for believers and skeptics alike.”
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“In this bold and insightful book on John, Stanley Porter plies the same rigorous scholarship he has demonstrated in Synoptic studies toward discerning the authentic voice of the Fourth Gospel. . . . Refusing to relegate the Johannine Gospel to the product of a backwater, sectarian community, Porter restores it to its rightful place at the table — at the center of Gospel and Jesus studies alike. This book will make waves; it is good.”
