Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“What a remarkable achievement, a scholarly book that is deeply creative, intellectually meaningful, spiritually important, and so beautifully written. Here is a welcome introduction to scriptural texts that are familiar and to scriptural readings that are startling. Muer's and Higton are the poets of the new British theologians, and their reputation for brilliant and thoughtful reading is best appreciated in this fine book. Laurie Zoloth, Northwestern University "The Text in Play offers a broad curriculum on how to read Scripture as Scripture--that is, as witness to the living God whose Word lives in a dynamic interchange with its reader. . . . It is a serious, playful read, a book you can read in one entranced sitting or again and again, a book that refreshes itself as you read it because such is the way of the Word.”
Philosophy
“An utterly remarkable treatise on the inter-religious friendships that joined three pairs of the great thinkers of twentieth-century Europe. I know of nothing quite like this. It is rigorous scholarship that has the sharp edge of cultural criticism and yet the inspiring effect of a philosophic and spiritual poem. Its lesson is indeed uncommon: that critical reason is strengthened by love, that love is deepened by undomesticated difference, and that, in a quiet way, the name of God may have a lot to do with all of the above.”
