Preaching & Worship
“In this wilderness time of division in spirit and isolation in body, to preach Jesus is the Church's only hope and its most important duty. In words both passionate and profound, Bishop Craig Satterlee calls us back to our vocation as preachers of the gospel, 'showing forth Christ' at every turn, and setting an example each of us will feel as a challenge and an aspiration. I cannot imagine a more faithful or trustworthy guide to help us re-center ourselves on Jesus.”
Theology
“The great "solas" of Reformation theology have taken on a life of their own, but to be more than slogans they have always needed explication and contextualization. With Volker Leppin's usual combination of erudition and boldness, his new book does just that, both setting out the complex origins of these simple slogans and showing us the richness of the theological and devotional context in which Luther works his way toward them. Again, Leppin shows us a lively, active, creative Luther pushing forward to a deeper and more powerful understanding of God's Word made flesh as the heart of Christian faith.”
History & Biography
Foreword
“Leonard S. Smith's final book, The Expert's Historian: Otto Hintze and the Nature of Modern Historical Thought, is both a discrete collection of reflections on the development of historiography and, in the collective, a kind of intellectual autobiography. In a striking way, Dr. Smith's own development as a historian and historiographer relates to his subject matter, and this consonance adds unexpected passion and depth to his conclusions.”
Ethics, Culture & Social Issues
“Prickly, earthy, and contentious as he often was, the 'domestication' of Martin Luther by subsequent generations of pious Lutherans has been an odd kind of achievement. This book continues the re-discovery of 'the forgotten Luther,' and restores some of his fiery critique of false images and ideas of godliness and systems that oppressed ordinary people.”
