Theology
“Jon Coutts has provided us with the first substantial and reliable treatment of Karl Barth's theology of forgiveness as it appears in the final volume of the magisterial Church Dogmatics. This nuanced exposition and extension of Barth's thought on the theme of forgiveness is astute and generous in its theological judgements, clear in its expression, and practical in its orientation. This is not a blueprint theology but one that engages with Barth's understanding of the gospel of reconciliation in relation to the community ordered and animated by the gift of forgiveness for the sake of the world. Forgiveness, received in justification and sanctification, entails a vocation to share it, since God's mercy in Christ is a shared mercy and a mercy to share.”
Theology
“A book that seizes and sustains interest. This remarkable collection of conversations, beautifully edited and translated, reveals Karl Barth in his first year of retirement doing theology, not as dogmatikos (firm doctrinal formulation), but as gynastikos (something being tested) with multiple publics and media. He shows himself at home in all of them. In every case, Barth engages with his partner and the crucial issues of the time with curiosity, patience, insight, seriousness, and above all with joy rooted in the living God. This book enriches our perception of Karl Barth, especially in the conversations around the Barmen Declaration.”
Evangelism & Missions
“With deft analogical imagination, Lockhart retrieves crucial insights from the missional practice of St. Patrick for twenty-first-century secular society. Finally, a treatment of missional practice willing to be at odds with our context rather than treat it as fate. This book is a treasure.”
World Religions
“The great strength of this volume of essays is that the authors engage the positive resources of their particular faith traditions for the sake of friendship, love of neighbor, and a more compassionate world. Religions have not always construed outsiders with generosity; however, these authors—with fidelity to their own deep faith commitment—do! What a hopeful volume.”
Christian Living
“Friendship with Christ develops themes in Reformed theology for the life of the church that speak to the moment. It is personal, moving, and deeply theological in the very best sense. Its themes of love and friendship are essential in a time of alienation and fear, and it avoids altogether the shallow sentimentality that often marks expositions of these themes. Rooted in Reformed Christology (with its appeal to the threefold office of Jesus Christ), this book draws the reader’s attention to seminal New Testament texts and offers support and encouragement for the Christian life. It fills a serious vacancy of resources for the Christian life that are not ephemeral. ephemeral. This book will be useful at both seminary and congregational levels.”
Church Leadership & Ministry
“With the Bible in one hand and an iPad in the other, Ross Lockhart reads affluence and apathy as the sites of the 'Laodicean' captivity of the church. To break free from that captivity, someone needs to say something; the someone is the missional church, the something is Jesus Christ, crucified and risen.”
History & Biography
“Bryant weaves together contextual analysis, history of doctrine, and human interest in this treatment of whole history of Christian thought. . . . His years of experience shine through in deft descriptions of seminal thinkers and intelligent selection of key moments in the Christian traditions. Out of Galilee is outstanding as a single volume designed to induct the reader into Christian conversation.”
Resurrection, Apocalypse, and the Kingdom of Christ
Theology
“Stanley MacLean adds a welcome volume to the burgeoning corpus of theological literature on Thomas F. Torrance. Occasioned by great events of the twentieth century and grounded in the 'one extended event' of Jesus Christ, Torrance's eschatology is practical, pastoral, and ecumenical. MacLean carefully searches out ad hoc sources of Torrance's apocalyptic eschatology and articulates its elements with deft theological and historical sensitivity.”
Preaching & Worship
“I have listened, laughed, and teared up at these vividly communicated stories . . . Embedded in the way the stories are told is the imagination of the storyteller, deeply shaped by the gospel of Jesus Christ and wise in the deferral of all stories to the story.”
Counseling, Grief & Mental Health
“Wise, compassionate and deeply rooted in the gospel of healing and hope, this book is crucial for a time like ours. Never shying away from the lived experience of traumatic loss since it is ‘at the heart of the Christian imagination,’ Van Deusen Hunsinger roots the work of healing and pastoral care in the gospel and the miraculous grace of the Holy Spirit. There is no saccharine rush past the impact of sorrow and loss, which can be past bearing. At the cross Jesus Christ, the Lord, bears the unbearable, not just alongside us, but for us—taking on himself what cannot be borne by people. The best I have read in this burgeoning field of scholarship.”
The Rule of Faith and Biblical Interpretation
Biblical Studies & Commentaries
“Fennell makes a compelling case for reading Scripture with the ‘communion of saints.’ He commends humility enough to learn from a series of astute theological interpreters of Holy Scripture . . . The book assumes the natural habitat of the Bible is church, and that what the Bible is about, God, directs its interpretation. Absolutely wonderful.”
The Visible Shape of Christ's Life in Us
Bible Studies & Devotionals
“The focus of this catechetical collection of sermons is Christian character, the fruit of the Spirit. They work the soil in which virtue grows and teach and celebrate the harvest the Spirit births in the baptized. Practical, insightful, and theologically rooted, these sermons invite study. The questions at the end of each chapter push toward glad appropriation of gospel virtue in the power of the Spirit for life, common life, and the world God loves.”
Prayer & Spiritual Formation
“This is an extraordinary book. In Watch and Wonder, Sutterfield invites contemplation of God's wild, weird, and wounded world through the spiritual practice of birding. This is not a birdwatching book. It is an invitation to active and patient engagement with creatures of extravagant color and character in their individuality, as revelatory of the God who made them and us. Paying attention, lingering in astonishment to the point of love and solidarity with birds and their places in the world is the invitation the book offers. I especially loved that Sutterfield's Christian imagination, formed and informed by liturgy, theological study, and the stories of scripture, frames a seeing of both the glory and brokenness of the world through the lens of birding. It is as though birding also participates in the history of redemption.”
